Mann waa re-elected pres ident of the Allied Welfare associa tion at its annual luncheon-meeting at the Hotel Medford Friday noon. He haa held the position for several years. Others elected were Miss Helen Carlton, vice-president, and Miss Ruth Meusel, secretary. The nomin ating committee comprised Eugene Thorndlke, Mrs. W. A. Hollo way and Mrs. Dolph Phipps. Oeorge T. Prey announced net proceeds of $173-96 from the annual President's ball, held to raise funds to war on Infantile paralysis. This sum, Mr. Prey explained, represents the 70 per cent going to each com munity in which the balls are held. the other 30 per cent going to na tional headquarters for maintenance of Warm Springs Foundation. The association voted to turn the money over to the Sparrow Memorial clinic to assist it in carrying on Its work for poliomyelitis victims. The association meeta regularly to hear reports from allied relief and character building organizations, service clubs and lodges, the aim be ing to coordinate charitable and hu manitarian efforts. To avoid con flicts with other meetings, the as sociation decided to hold Its lunch eons in future on the last Thursday of every month instead of Friday as In the past. WANDERING YOUTH HELD AS ROBBER i A 18-year-old Olympla, Wash., schoolboy, Maynard Wicks, waa taken off a northbound freight truck here Friday morning, questioned regard ing the robbery of a Hornbrook, Cal ifornia, garage, and returned to Sher iff Chandler of Yreka upon his con fession to participation In the rob bery, it was stated yesterday by city police, who made the arrest. The lad, who cried when arrested and aald that he wanted to return to Olympla lest his mother be overly worried about him, told the arresting officers that he had left the Wash ington capltol In company with an other boy, several years his senior, several days ago to wend their way to California. They rode freight trains to Klamath Palls, and hitch hiked to Hornbrook, where they found themselves broke. Wick told state and city police that he and his companion had entered the garage and taken money from the till. His partner, he aald, did the actual robbery while he, Wicks, kept a lookout. The spoils were divided outside the shop, Wicks admitting that he received 43.70 of the spoils. He then started hitch -hiking north, and caught a ride from the Hilt checking station to Medford on the truck on which he waa found. AGED MINER DIED FROM EXHAUSTION, CO RO NERSTATES The body of William Reed, 80-year old indigent who waa found dead on the A pp legato Thursday evening, was yesterday burled In potter's field after the county coroner, Prank Perl, had decided that there was no need for an inquest. The body of the aged miner waa discovered by J. H. Ingle man, a miner In the Star Gulch dis trict of the Applegate. Inglem&n bad driven by the spot the day before and noticed the bright ly colored blazer that Reed was wearing, lying 33 feet to the side of the well traveled road. Surmising that a COC worker had abandoned the garment, he resolved to retrieve It on hi next trip by. When he came back, he discovered the body, and Immediately notified Ranger Lee port of the Star ranger station seven miles away, that Reed had been found. Marks near the body told a tragic tale. Apparently demented, the old man had taken off his ahoes while wandering the underbrush near the road. His feet had become entangled In the underbrush and he had ap parently fallen. A alight depression there portrayed the feeble struggle to release himself before death over took him. The body had been there approximately six weeks, the coroner said. The scene of the gruesome find was 14 miles from Reed's cabin, 28 miles by the only road. Those fam iliar with the country state that only a herculean effort could have car ried the old man that far, in his condition and age. Ranger Port assisted Deputy Cor oner Herb Brown in taking up the body, and in making an Inspection of the aged miner's cabin. Reed Is survived by a sister In Orleans, New York, who haa so far been -unlocated. Two daughters and a son are also believed to be living In Los Angeles, but efforts to locate them have proved futile. Reed him self rode freight trains to that dis trict six months ago In an effort to find bis family but met with no success, and returned to his friend less surroundings in the bleak hills he called home.
