i A 18-year-old Olympla, Wash.,

police, who made the arrest.
The lad, who cried when arrested

AGED MINER DIED
FROM EXHAUSTION,
CO RO NERSTATES
The body of William Reed, 80-year
old indigent who waa found dead on
the A pp legato Thursday evening, was
yesterday burled In potter's field
after the county coroner, Prank Perl,
had decided that there was no need
for an inquest. The body of the aged
miner waa discovered by J. H. Ingle
man, a miner In the Star Gulch dis
trict of the Applegate.
Inglem&n bad driven by the spot
the day before and noticed the bright
ly colored blazer that Reed was
wearing, lying 33 feet to the side of
the well traveled road. Surmising
that a COC worker had abandoned
the garment, he resolved to retrieve
It on hi next trip by. When he came
back, he discovered the body, and
Immediately notified Ranger Lee
port of the Star ranger station seven
miles away, that Reed had been
found.
Marks near the body told a tragic
tale. Apparently demented, the old
man had taken off his ahoes while
wandering the underbrush near the
road. His feet had become entangled
In the underbrush and he had ap
parently fallen. A alight depression
there portrayed the feeble struggle
to release himself before death over
took him. The body had been there
approximately six weeks, the coroner
said.
The scene of the gruesome find
was 14 miles from Reed's cabin, 28
miles by the only road. Those fam
iliar with the country state that only
a herculean effort could have car
ried the old man that far, in his
condition and age.
Ranger Port assisted Deputy Cor
oner Herb Brown in taking up the
body, and in making an Inspection
of the aged miner's cabin.
Reed Is survived by a sister In
Orleans, New York, who haa so far
been -unlocated. Two daughters and
a son are also believed to be living
In Los Angeles, but efforts to locate
them have proved futile. Reed him
self rode freight trains to that dis
trict six months ago In an effort
to find bis family but met with no
success, and returned to his friend
less surroundings in the bleak hills
he called home.
