PARIS (UP) Contending thst Em He Cohl, ao-yesr old French art ist. Is the , real creator of animated screen .drawings, the French press had adopted an sir of Injured dig nlty in regard to the naming of Walt Disney, father of Mickey Mouse, as Knight ox tne French Legion of Honor. t ' Several French Journalists have banded together to right "this In justice" snd to give Em He Cohl the "honor, financial recompense and security against old age that la his right." Various stories, i dwelling chiefly on the tear-filled eye and trembling voice of the white-haired artist, bewail the fact that his pio neer work has been forgotten. Two sketches, primitive In style, Illustrate one of the defensive sn ides. Cohl, who named his charac ters "The Pantoches," made sketchy black and white drawings In which arms and legs were indicated' by scanty lines without any of the clever detail work shown In the Disney drawings. Interviewed recently, the veteran artist explained, "I had been suc cessful In newspaper work and fell Into cinema work by a streak of luok, having got my Inspiration for cinema cartoons from an advertising signboard X happened to pass In the street. "I sold my Idea to a film director, who first made fun of me and then gave me a contract. I made still drawings for a while and then got the Idea of making an animated car toon for the screen. I had much suc cess between 1908 end 1913, when I was called to America, where other people began to copy my work. The war came along and I returned to Prance, where I found that I could get no financial backing. I threw up the sponge. I had to live. "I have made a living, but Z shall protest to the last against those who disregard the truth, and refuse to admit that I am ,the first to create animated drawings for tne cinema. What people thought was a joke at first has given something fine and noble to the cinema. I don't expect recognition, for France always has a tendency to recognize her artists and scholars only when they are resting beneath marble stones." Although the artist feels that he has been abused both by Prance and the United States, and that his orig inal crude animated cartoons have been . Ignored, he will receive recom pense from friends and journalists, who will make sure of his comforts for the rest of his life. -, HE TELLS Meteorological Report Foreraata Medford and rtclnlty: Increasing cloudiness tonight and Saturday, be coming unsettled; cooler Saturday. Spring began officially at 10 :58 this morning. ' It Is a popular understanding that spring begins March 21 and that Is very nearly correct. Meteorologists and astronomers, however, are much more precise, and are not satisfied with anything that Is not absolutely I correct. Any meteorologist or astron omer worth his salt will not tolerate generalities. Although they deal with infinite time and space, they do not hesitate to split a second or divide millimeter. Bo the eminent scientists atate that precisely at 10:58 this morning, Pacific standard time, spring began. At that moment the sun crossed the equator on Us swing to the north. That Is the vernal equinox. Today the sun strikes all parts of the earth from pole to pole. Every where It rises due east and sets due west. Everywhere It Is above the horizon 12 hours.. , In winter the sun appears low In the south, but in summer la very high. This is due, scientist explain, to the earth's annual trip around the sun and the fact that the pole tips 23 degrees from an upright orbital position. Prom December to June the sun's dally path across the sky gradually moves farther north. Ancient methods allowed the be ginning of spring to wander widely throughout the calendar. Leap years were finally adepted as a means of keeping the vernal equinox near a flxod date. 90 PR00F :) mycigarette...Hikemy j ; ,', 1 ' " ' ta, Let your cigarette remind you of the whisky to buy.
