Y.- (UP) Noises, such as made by street cars and fac tory whistles literally upset the nerves, whllo the roar of an airplane motor contributes to alr-stckness. warns Dr. L. Grant Hector of the University of Buffalo. Noise experiments conducted by the scientist have proved several things - to his satisfaction Chief among them ts that some noises have a detrimental effect on human beings. "You don't Just hear a noise," Dr. Hector explains. "It effects your whole sensory apparatus. The physi ological effect of a noise depends on It volume and the frequency of the air vibrations It seta up. In other words. Its pitch. "Loud noises of high pitch result In Irritability and nervousness, where as low notes upset the digestive pro cesses and have a definite physical effect." In bis noise studio, for., Hector breaks noises down Into their com ponent parts, or frequencies, so as to tell how to go about either elimi nating or reducing them. , A box-like gadget with vibrating filaments has been developed tn the laboratory to analyze noise. It em bodies several original features which make It possible to tell In an Instant the components of any given noise. "The noise is picked." Dr. Hector says, "with a dynamic microphone, amplified with a conventional audio frequency amplifier and then fed into analyzer, which separates all the components of the noises according to' their various pitches. The fre quencies are indicated on the Hlumi-1 nsted dial." The analyser has been used ex tensively In Dr. Hector's work with automobile and airplane mufflers. With the apparatus he has cut down the roar of airplane motors to 10 per cent of their original volume. Dr. Hector built a cathode ray af fair which literally pictures the voice. The ray Involves a bombardment of electrons against a fluoreerent screen. Every tone or pitch of the voice is traced In a pattern of green ish light . on the screen, to corre spond to the shape of the sound waves in the air. ' Render Tea & Coffee Co. Phone 1057. ' 24 N. Thus an impasce has been reached. The health officer emphasized that be has no authority to order the ton sllectomles and that he did not do so. The children, he explained, will be barred from school only so long ss they are considered a source of Infec tion. He declared be would offer no objections to their resuming school attendance if they are given & clear bill of health by another doctor but It was understood the family physi cian had declined to do thts lest he become embroiled In a public health and school controversy.
