PAGE NTNTE LI 10 COMING TUESDAY Competition for the debate cham pionship of the southern Oregon con ference between Ashland, Oranta Past and Medford high achoola, rill get under way next Tuesday when the Medford negative team meets the Grants Pass afllrmstlve In this city at two-thirty p. m. in the high school auditorium. Tuesday evening, tne Medford affirmative will go to Grants Pass to meet the Cave City negative team, falling In with the plan of dual debates. Due to the fact that Medford drew a bye. there will be no debates here Wednesday, but on Thursday afternoon the Ashland af firmative will come to Medford to clash with the Medford negative :.t the high school and In the evening the process will be reversed. The question, "Resolved: That the several states should ensct legislation providing for a system of complete medical service available to all citi zens at state expense" la being de bated by high schools of thlrty-slx states this year. The winner of the southern Ore gon championship will compete In district finals, the successful team eventually meeting other winners for a state championship. Two perm&nent Judges will be se lected from the faculty of the South ern Oregon Normal school and one temporary Judge each day from the city In which the trials are conducted. (AP) President Roosevelt considers the Columbia rlvere basin, tvn area large enough to warrant a special develop ment authority similar to the Ten nessee valley authority. He expressed this view today In reply to a press conference question bout the northwest watershed. Whether legislation would be ought at this session was not dis cussed. It la considered rather un likely in view of the attempts on capttol hill for an early adjourn ment. (Associated Presa Photos) ASSUMES DUTIES Wilfrid T. - Frost of Berkeley. Cal., began his new duties today as rang er of Crater lake national park. He will be stationed temporarily at An nie Springs whither he spent this afternoon after conferring here with J. Carlisle Crouch, chief ranger and acting superintendent. Mr. Frost, who arrived here by train this morning from Berkeley, has had considerable experience In park work. He was with the service under ECW for two and a half years in Sequo.a national park. From there he was transferred to Glacier national park where he has served the past six months. . He recently qualified as a park ranger under civil service and was given a temporary appointment ef fective today. His permanent appoint ment is expected soon. Mr. Frost expects to be Joined In the summer by his wife who for the present la continuing to reside In Berkeley, this afternoon by a slkr at the east entrance to the Elk creek tunnel at Hancock mountain, according to word received at the division office of the state highway department here. Heavy rain last night and this morning loosened approximately 2000 to 2500 yards of rock and dirt which completely covered the high way, it was reported. John Mattlesen, Hauptmann's splr- i ltual adviser, had sent a circular let- ter to many pastors of the United , Lutheran church In the United States, saying "an encouraging word" to the governor at this time "would be greatly appreciated." The Rev. Alexander Berg, pastor of Christ Lutheran church, Trenton, wfeo received one of the letters said it read in part: Much To Do "I feel that we as ministers have a great duty to perform to preach and to stress civic rights aa based upon God's word. And there Is a great deal for ua to do. We have a right to uphold those people who are Interested In that, and especially at this time the governor of this state, Harold Q. Hoffman, and encouraging word from Christian people to him at this time would be greatly apprec iated." The letter waa sent to Mr. Matthle- sen "for no other purpose than to enlighten you about .his (Haupt mann's) moral and spiritual attitude toward the kingdom of God and the Lutheran church." Of Hauptmann the minister had this to say: I know him and I love him. He is a true Christian and a brother of Christ ... I believe Hauptmann .has been greatly wronged OneEye Connelly Will Crash Gate Into California PHOENIX. Aria., Feb. 21. (AP) "One-Eye" Connelly who boast of being the world's foremost hobo and gate crasher, will test the Los Angeles bum blockade some time today. Connelly, who is headed for the Santa Anita handicap, and is "in a hurry," pooh-poohed sugges tions he might not crash the blockade thrown up by Los Ange les police to keep hoboes out At California. "It's going to be a cinch, a push over," Connelly said. "I've crashed tougher gates than those leading to California 5 a. m. today rain measured 55 of I an inch. Southerly winds, reaching gale force in the Sacramento valley, brought rising temperatures to the Medford area today. The lowest temperature this morning at 46 was ten degrees above yesterday's minimum. At mid day the mercury stood at S3, one de gree higher than yesterday's maxi mum and seven degrees above the mark at the same hour yesterday.
