PAGE FETE 4 q5cj MEDFORD MAIL TRIBTJXE. BEDFORD. OREGON, SUNDAY, "AUGUST 18. 1935.' SSJ.? '-lii- J AUTO WAY- By Cyril Sander Forrf Shows New All-Weather Sedan The English car that may be Mid. to be the real streamlined car ol England la known aa the Rear-En-gined Streamline Croasley. This 1 one of the lew rear-englned cara on the market anywhere In the world. Although this company la one of the few automobile companies that has had the Initiative or "nerve" to finally locate the engine where we are Inclined to think It should have been all along. It still could stand a little Improvement In our opinion. Of course, however, one cannot ex pect a company to do everything In one year, so we have hopes that this car that has gotten olf to a good start may finally end up as some thing really good. Now for a little criticism, both good and bad. Xn the first place we are alightly In clined to believe that the word "streamline" was stretched a little in order that It might apply to this car. The two features that might apply to a really streamlined car are the sloping windshield and the slightly slanting rear, but outside pf those feaures this car might be said to be most anything but stream lined. In the first place, the front part of the car is practically Identi cal with those of other English cars. The old conventional headlights- axe still In their conventional place, as conspicuous as ever. Then there are, of course, those odd small, bicycle type of fendenU However, if one forgets the appearance, there are many advantages in this car. The doors are much wider, the passengers ride right between the axles where the best ride is, the car as a whole is lower and all of the engine noises. gases, and vibrations are now behind you where they no longer bother the passengers. Some of the odd features about this car are: First, the spare tire It Is mounted in the rear door panel, on the opposite side there Is a simi lar compartment where the tools and other equipment are carried. There la a very large compartment behind the rear seat, too, for carrying extra luggage, etc. Another odd Idea is used in the windows. Those in the front doors wind up and down, while those in the rear doors are divided in the middle and slide back and forth. Still another odd feature is that the rear track of this car la exactly one foot and one Inch narrower than the front track I Here in America we are somewhat accustomed to a 7 r A NEW all -weather Ford V-8 convertible sedan, a dual pur pose car, available for use either as an open phaeton or a snug en closed sedan, is announced by the Ford Motor Company. Top photo shows the new body type with top in place; below, the top down, win dows lowered, and center door pillars removed. The top, of tan-colored doth, can be lowered and folded snugly, covered by a boot, back of the rear seat. The two center pillars are removable and may be stowed away in the car. ' Converted in this fashion into a phaeton-type body, the car may be driven with the four door windows lowered out of sight, or raised Into position as a protection against excessive wind. The window glasses are en closed in chrome plated frames. The body is equipped with de luxe appointments, including robe rail and ash tray in the rear com partment. Seat cushions and backs are finished in genuine leather or bedford cord, according to the pur chaser's choice. The interior finish is in taupe throughout The cars are available in all standard colors including gun metal, the new color introduced this year. The luggage compartment back of the rear seat is even more spa cious than in the sedans, providing plenty of room for slowing bag gage while traveling. difference of an inch or so but a foot that'a quite a bitl A couple of other things that might be called Innovations are the location of the radiator and 1 the gas tank. One might think that with a rear en glned car the radiator would, ol course, be mounted somewhere in the rear, but not in this car. It is in the same position as on all other cars and the water Is circulated the entire length of the car, from the radiator In front to the engine in back! The gas tank la located right beneath the rear seat how ever, you don't have to get out ol your seat to fill It like you' for merly did in the old "model T" it la filled from the side I For the most part, the rest of the car is very much the same as conventional automobiles. A six-cylinder engine la used and the wheels, front and rear, are Independently sprung. f After January l, 1036. all automo biles sold in California will be re quired to use safety glass. F IN NARTH MM WASHINGTON, Aug. 17. (AP) The flying hazards braved by Will Rogers and Wiley Post In Alaska were pic tured aa a "terrible ordeal" today by a man who has faced them. AUTO SUPPLY & SERVICE STORE Ninth and Riverside Phone 520 FORD V-8 -e- ou ride in safety with the Ford VS SAFETY comes first in designing a Ford car. The people look to us to make the safest car it is possible to make. Cost doesn't enter into that. Long ago we decided that the all-steel body was the safest type of automobile body. It cost us more, but it was the right thing to do. So we put it into production. Safety Glass was another important step for ward. As far back as 1927 we began using it for the windshields of the Ford. Now all Ford body types are equipped with Safety Glass through out. It costs us more to provide this extra protection, but you do not pay extra for it. Ford brakes are another important safety fea ture. They are powerful and quick-stopping and we believe they are the safest and most dependable type of brakes for motor cars. Cost isn't a factor here Ford brakes are the same design as those used on the most expensive automobiles. The idea behind the Ford V-8 is to bring a constantly higher standard of motor car value within reach of every one who drives. That applies to safety as well as performance, com fort, beauty and convenience. FORD MOTOR COMPANY On lit Air Tub Waukg and Hii Fiii HiTLVANiAHi aid Stoofnagli and Bum, . .
