PAGE FOUR MTCDFCRD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFOKD, OREGON. SUNDAY. .TUNE 23, 1933. TO WASHINGTON. D. C, June 31 Th ln-r In hitch -hiking, due Iwely to the rpcora-reRXln pro portion of automobile travel this year, today prompted the American Automobile association to iue a atrong warning to motorist against these perennial peat of the high way. Despite an apparent decrease In the number of "thumbwavera" lat yeer, the natiorwl motoring body de clared, reports from It affiliated clubs all over the country indicate that the ride moochcra are now In festing the road in greater numbers than ever before. "While the majority of hitch-hiker are perfectly harmless people merely aecklng a free ride," the A. A. A. statement continued, "a num ber of desperadoes have taken ad Tantage of kind-hearted motorists and already thta year a number of robberies and at least one brutal murder have been perpetrated by eemlngly Innocent hitch-hikers. "With the federal and state govern ment in the midst of a grlevou war on various types of crime, it is known to be a fact that many suspect have eluded officer thtrough their ability to wheedle rides out of passing mo torists. "Commercial travelers are particu larly prone to give ride to hitch hiker. This 1 possibly due to a crav ing lor company. Experience ha dem onstrated that the tendency to get lonesome usually overcome a lone driver toward the fag end of the diy. Kxpert hltch-hlkera testify to this and also that the period Immediate ly after lunch, when the motorit Is at peace with the word, 1 another good time for obtaining free trans portation. "In order to curb thl evil, twslve state have enacted laws definitely prohibiting solicitation of free rides along the hlghwaya, frequently im posing fines upon offenders. These twelve states are: Connecticut, Dela ware, the District of Columbia, Maine. Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota. Pennsylvania. Utah. Vermont and Wisconsin. In Minne sota there are local ordinances sgalnst hitch-hiking. "Adoption of these law In the other states, strict enforcement and wholehearted cooperation by motor ist for their own protection, are ur gently needed in order to end the annoyance and danger Inherent In the praetle of giving rides to strangers. "A further reason for refusing transportation to the 'Knight of the Order of the Thumb" is that in twenty-two states, a guest riding In an automobile can sue the motorist for damages In case of Injury merely by proving ordinary carolcssneM or neg ligence. Thus, under the common law right of action, mnny motorists have found themselves forced to pay damage to tranger who had soli cited transportation but who haled him Into court when an accident occurred." If new coun try is what you like, don't follow the highway all the way home, but turn to the right down Rogue river at the Shady Cove bridge, re-cross-Ing the river at either Dodge or By brfl bridge. The whole drive needn't take more thnn two and a half to three hours, allowing ample time for a day's outing at the covered bridge. For a fairly long afternoon's drive, it I ideal. The dirt roads encompassed In the loop drive are junooth and good, but are slightly dusty. Light travel, how ever, renders this a minor detail. In the drive down the river from the Shndy Cove bridge, the roads are only In fair condition. FINE FISHERMEN FOR UMPQUA NETS ROSERURO. Ore.. Kiindny Drive SupseMlon Exploring the less known by ways of Southern Oregon In the family auto, a pleasure neglected during the pinch of depression. Is again becoming a popular week-end dlverston. As a means of aiding selection of routes which will bring a maximum ot enjoyment, the Mail Tribune In tends to call attention each week to some locality Ideal for picnic swimming, fishing, or Just a com fortable drive. The aeries is expected to prove Cleclnlty helpful to newcomers. It Is not the Intention to In clude such well-known places as Crater Lake and ot her major scenic spots, but rather to tell ot the ronds meandering from main highways, which oftentimes lead through some of the mot chsrm ln country In the state. j The suggestion for today Is the road which turns off over the Mc- Ieod bridge, about 32 miles from 1 Medford. Often as you have driven along beyond thta point, you have noticed the covered bridfie In the , canyon far below, and no doubt the i youngsters hav asked to be taken , to it. That hridge was on the old raurelhurat branch of the Crater , Lake highway, and by following up 1 the rlclit side of the river from the I McLeod bridge, one not only comes upon the old covered bridge, but also drives by the mountain orchard i of Stewart Weeks, and the Dltts ' worth strawberry farm, and then 'down Into the canyon. Near the old bridge on the left side of the river looking upstream, is an Ideal pie nlclnc spot, but swiftness of the river forbids swimming at this point, i An Interesting day's outing Is to ; take the suggested route, turning otf ' at the McLeod bridge, following on I up the river to the old Laurrlhurst 1 ; I rk If I ,m-... ina; PEAVY TUESDAY Dr. O.
