WASHINGTON. D. C, June 31
Th ln-r In hitch -hiking, due
Iwely to the rpcora-reRXln pro
portion of automobile travel this
year, today prompted the American
Automobile association to iue a
atrong warning to motorist against
these perennial peat of the high
way. Despite an apparent decrease In
the number of "thumbwavera" lat
yeer, the natiorwl motoring body de
clared, reports from It affiliated
clubs all over the country indicate
that the ride moochcra are now In
festing the road in greater numbers
than ever before.
"While the majority of hitch-hiker
are perfectly harmless people
merely aecklng a free ride," the A.
A. A. statement continued, "a num
ber of desperadoes have taken ad
Tantage of kind-hearted motorists
and already thta year a number of
robberies and at least one brutal
murder have been perpetrated by
eemlngly Innocent hitch-hikers.
"With the federal and state govern
ment in the midst of a grlevou war
on various types of crime, it is known
to be a fact that many suspect have
eluded officer thtrough their ability
to wheedle rides out of passing mo
torists. "Commercial travelers are particu
larly prone to give ride to hitch
hiker. This 1 possibly due to a crav
ing lor company. Experience ha dem
onstrated that the tendency to get
lonesome usually overcome a lone
driver toward the fag end of the diy.
Kxpert hltch-hlkera testify to this
and also that the period Immediate
ly after lunch, when the motorit Is
at peace with the word, 1 another
good time for obtaining free trans
portation. "In order to curb thl evil, twslve
state have enacted laws definitely
prohibiting solicitation of free rides
along the hlghwaya, frequently im
posing fines upon offenders. These
twelve states are: Connecticut, Dela
ware, the District of Columbia, Maine.
Minnesota, New Jersey, New York,
North Dakota. Pennsylvania. Utah.
Vermont and Wisconsin. In Minne
sota there are local ordinances sgalnst
hitch-hiking.
"Adoption of these law In the
other states, strict enforcement and
wholehearted cooperation by motor
ist for their own protection, are ur
gently needed in order to end the
annoyance and danger Inherent In the
praetle of giving rides to strangers.
"A further reason for refusing
transportation to the 'Knight of the
Order of the Thumb" is that in twenty-two
states, a guest riding In an
automobile can sue the motorist for
damages In case of Injury merely by
proving ordinary carolcssneM or neg
ligence. Thus, under the common
law right of action, mnny motorists
have found themselves forced to pay
damage to tranger who had soli
cited transportation but who haled
him Into court when an accident occurred."
