J Medpord Mail Tribun: Second Section Thirtieth Year MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 7, 3933. Xo. (iG. Six Pages SCOUT JAMBOREE VAST MAGNITUDE 400 Acres Will Be Required for Camp 1,050,000 Gallons of Water Will Be Supplied Boys Daily (Contributed) Think of the magnitude of laying out a plot of 300 acres for tent space alone, plus another 100 acres that must be referred for demonstrations, circuses, reviews, and the like. And yet, that Is exactly what Is taking place in the nation's Capital right now. where 16.000 stakes are marking out the camp sites for the 30,000 Boy Scouts who are to occupy this canvas city of 8,500 sleeping tents from August 31 to August 30. Scouts from all over the United States, and from foreign countries as well, will encamp In Washington for their National Jamboree, the first event of Its kind ever given In this country. the greatest outdoor camp ing event for boys in the history of America, with every Boy Scout pres ent deBtlned to experience the great est thrill of his life. Think of providing facilities that will Insure the supply of 1.050,000 gallons of fresh waver a day water to drink, water to bathe In. water to cook with, water to provide against hazards of any kind. Experience has proved that at camp every boy uses about thirty gallons of water dally, and Boy Scouts, pertiaps, above all others, believe In personal cleanliness to the limit. Shower baths? Can you Imagine 3.200 Boy Scout getting doused un der shower baths all at one and the same time? But that la the exact number of shower baths which will be provided. Some splash. Just re member, too, that all of this water after being used must be properly disposed of. which virtually doubles the water provisions. Another engin eering provision. Can you picture these 30,000 stal wart Scout upon their arriving In Washington, all within a short space of time, but all so accustomed to camping and hiking that they will Immediately fit Into their various camps as If they were tailor-made right on the spot, no confusion, be cause their Scout training has taught them how to adjust themselves to the conditions of the moment. So for ten days these up-and-coming young men of America will be given a chance to see every worth while sight in their nation's Capital, Including a trip down the Potomac to Mount Vernon. 6.000 Scouts making this trip under proper leadership each day. The Scouts' own honorary presi dent. President Roosevelt, will re ceive them In grand review. Another high spot will be the Nat ional Camp Fire which promises to be the greatest camp fire this coun try has ever seen. Imagine 30.000 Boy Scouts witnessing pageantry In which will be shown the outstanding ex hibit from each of the twelve regions of the United States on an outdoor stage the like of which has not been seen since the days of Klralfy. There will be Immense campflres at either end. and the great readers In Scout ing, of which probably the president will be one, wilt be presented to that vast and intensely enthusiastic bunch of young Americans; followed per haps by a display of fireworks that will out-rival anything since the days of Paine. And what a picturesque colorful Jamboree it will be, a gathering that not a single Boy Scout who is lucky enough to attend will ever erase from his memory. Strawberry canning time ts at hand again In Ore gon, and as many homemakers make plana to "put up" berries for the coming year one of the questions most often asked Is how to keep them from shrinking and rising to the top of the Jar. The answer to this, says Miss Lucy Case, extension specialist In nutrition at Oregon State college, Is to place the hulled, washed berries In a pre serving kettle or other container al ternating a layer of berries with a layer of sugar, and let them stand over night or about 13 hours. She recommends one-third to one-half cup of sugar for each box of berries. By this process the berries are plumped, losing part of their Juice and absorbing part of the sugar. Next morning the homemaker may can the berriea by any of several methods, the three most commonly used being the hot water bath, the pressure cooker, and the open kettle. By the hot water method the ber ries are brought to a boll In their own Juice and packed hot into hot. sterilized jars, to within one-half inch of the top. The Jars are sealed immediately and lowered Into boil ing water which should come one Inch over the top of the Jars. The Jars should rest on a rack one-half inch from the bottom of the boiler. Remove the Jars after they have boiled 10 minutes. Re tighten the seal of screw top Jnra, and cool away from a draft. In twine the pressure cooker the berriea are brought to a boil and packed hot into the Jars tut Just de scribed, and then sealed and placed In the pressure cooker, in wb'ch the water should be one-half inch over the raok and boiling. Process at five pounds pressure for five rilnutes. By the open kettle method the ber ries are boiled five to 10 minutes in the kettle and packed to the top of Jars which have previously been sterilized by boiling, and seslod. When uMnt? this method, everything that comes In contact with the fruit should prevlouj.lv have bn boiled 10 minutes, including Jars, cup, lids and lubbers. Strawberries of firm texture, such aa the Etterburg 121, Corvullls and NnrclKMi varieties are best for can ning. Mi.ss Case says. Be correctly corseted In an Artist Model by Ethel wyn B Hoffmann.
