Oras Fire Reported The Medford fire department was called at 9:20 o'clock this morning to extinguish a small grass fire at 801 North Central avenue. Small Fire Controlled The forest service reported a small forest fire to day in the Elk creek section near Mc Donald ranch, evidently caused from old slashing burnings. A CCC crew had the fire under control soon after it waa reported. Called to Idaho Mrs. C. W. Ash pole left last night by train for Rlgby, Ida., having been called there by the death of her sister-in-law. "Bert" Orr In Portland, where he has been since Thursday of last week on business. He took sick while in the northern city, and was operated on Monday. Although he is reported as recovering satisfactorily, his condition is said to be serious. Mrs. Oavln and Son Visit Mrs. E. O. Gavin and son Pat of Portland are visiting friends and relatives in Jack sonville and Medford today. Mrs. Gavin, formerly Minnie Thompson of Jacksonville, is a cousin of Mrs. A. E. (Boss) McLaughlin, former political chieftain in Chicago, was sentenced to five years In Leaven worth prison as a conspirator m the kidnaping. (AP) The full power and influence of his office in protecting lumber and logging camp workers anxious to exercise their right to return to work under agree ments with their employers was guaranteed today by Governor Clar ence D. Martin. Aroused by a formal complaint from employes of the Malone plant of the Mumby Lumber and Shingle company. Governor Martin ordered the state patrol to co-operate fully with local authorities in arresting communists, professional agitators or others who threaten, coerce or in timidate workers who Joined the general lumber strike, but who have adjusted differences with employers and now are ready to go back to their Jobs. The governor explained that when the strike started his policy was to the effect that no "lasting benefits would accrue from forced or arbi trary agreements between employes ann employer. He believed It would be more beneficial in the long run U employes and employers would get together and make friendly agree ments. "It was felt," he said, "such agree ments would result In better under standing Hnd co-operation and a more permanent industrial stability. The state department of labor and industries, headed by E. Pat Kelly, was directed to serve as mediator in any effort to reach friendly agree ments, the governor said.
