OLYMPIA, June 7. (AP) The full
power and influence of his office in
protecting lumber and logging camp
workers anxious to exercise their
right to return to work under agree
ments with their employers was
guaranteed today by Governor Clar
ence D. Martin.
Aroused by a formal complaint
from employes of the Malone plant
of the Mumby Lumber and Shingle
company. Governor Martin ordered
the state patrol to co-operate fully
with local authorities in arresting
communists, professional agitators or
others who threaten, coerce or in
timidate workers who Joined the
general lumber strike, but who have
adjusted differences with employers
and now are ready to go back to
their Jobs.
The governor explained that when
the strike started his policy was to
the effect that no "lasting benefits
would accrue from forced or arbi
trary agreements between employes
ann employer.
He believed It would be
more beneficial in the long run U
employes and employers would get
together and make friendly agree
ments.
"It was felt," he said, "such agree
ments would result In better under
standing Hnd co-operation and a
more permanent industrial stability.
The state department of labor and
industries, headed by E. Pat Kelly,
was directed to serve as mediator in
any effort to reach friendly agree
ments, the governor said. The de
partment succeeded In "getting to
gether the employers and employes
of several mills."
