Chapter 34 WINDFALL pHE baby, for sll Its care, contln- tied an unhappy, wallirf morsel of humanity. It never laughed and crowed like other babies, and seemed to resent being brought even for a time Into this world. Doctor White said afterwards that he bad always known the child would never live. James felt so sorry for the little fellow that he was almost glad when he died, aged Ave months and seven days, from lack of vitality. It grieved James Inexpressibly that his son had not lived long enough to learn how truly his father loved him or what friends they night have been. Jane tried to keep her grief her own as she had tried to keep her child all to herself. "Why do you lock me out so conv pletely?" asked James gently one day. Mr. Northrup, to be sure, took most of the wind out of his sails by promptly making the check over to Jane, but even James could again hold hts head up and not feci guiltily conscious every time he looked his father-in-law In the eye. James felt so elated over hts un- expected ability to make money that be took Jane East on a seven weeks' trip and spent much of what he had left In the bank to Mr. N'orlhrup's unmitigated disgust. The trip, however, proved a great success and Jnne came back looking and feeling like ber old self, with her confidence somewhat re-established in ber huxbnnd. They seemed to have Ironed out most of their dif ferences In the weeks they were away. James was onco more happy and buoyant; Jane apain pretty uml en tertaining and willing to talk about something otlirr thau her health. Later It seemed to her that bis eyes and manner lacked their old time assurance and there was no doubt that when she saw him to talk to he had, after the greetings, little or nothing to say. THIS from James, who had alwayi been bubbling over with conver sation, waa enough to cause Mlsa Julia many a sleepless hour. Not long after, she noticed with growing uneasiness that the Judge seemed worried and unhappy. A little later It waa Impossible to Ignore the dis- quieting fact that tbe old man bad stopped bragging about "bis boy." In fact the Judge changed the sub ject more than onco when Miss Julia talked of James and this latter upset Miss Julia more than anything else. He avoided her more or less fox some months but one evening ha came In to see her soon after supper and she knew In a moment that b was In a towering rage. lie sat for a long time twitching about uncomfortnbly In his chnlr and glowering at his unhappy hostess who rocked Impatiently back and forth and elaborately made conver sion, while she speculated uneasily whatever ailed the man.
