WINDFALL
pHE baby, for sll Its care, contln-
tied an unhappy, wallirf morsel
of humanity. It never laughed and
crowed like other babies, and seemed
to resent being brought even for a
time Into this world.
Doctor White said afterwards that
he bad always known the child would
never live. James felt so sorry for the
little fellow that he was almost glad
when he died, aged Ave months and
seven days, from lack of vitality.
It grieved James Inexpressibly
that his son had not lived long
enough to learn how truly his father
loved him or what friends they
night have been. Jane tried to keep
her grief her own as she had tried to
keep her child all to herself.

store James' waning self-rospect
that and his ability to pay back to
Mr. Northrup the mony he had bor
rowed from him. Mr. Northrup, to
be sure, took most of the wind out
of his sails by promptly making the
check over to Jane, but even
James could again hold hts head up
and not feci guiltily conscious every
time he looked his father-in-law In
the eye.
James felt so elated over hts un-
expected ability to make money that
be took Jane East on a seven weeks'
trip and spent much of what he had
left In the bank to Mr. N'orlhrup's
unmitigated disgust.
The trip, however, proved a great
success and Jnne came back looking
and feeling like ber old self, with
her confidence somewhat re-established
in ber huxbnnd. They seemed
to have Ironed out most of their dif
ferences In the weeks they were
away.
James was onco more happy and
buoyant; Jane apain pretty uml en
tertaining and willing to talk about
something otlirr thau her health.
Jennie Crowell reported that Jnne
had spoken of their trip as a second
honc moon. Mips Julia came, upon

ject more than onco when Miss Julia
talked of James and this latter upset

Police authorities today lnveatlfaret
the marine labor affiliation of H men,
whOM arrest at Modesto they clalmea
balked a dynamite terror campaign
against th Standard OH company.
Both Stanislaus county and Sfn
Pranrlnco officials probed deeper Into
the aliened dynamite plot, uncovered
with the seizure of a dozen sticks of
explosives and arrest of the men near
Modesto Sunday. They linked It with
the Pacific coast oil tanker strike,
which began March 9. Hope the strike
would end "by the end of the weelc"
waa expressed today by a special me
diation board.
District Attorney Leslie A. Cleary
said at Modesto some of the men had
confessed to plana to blow up Stand
ard OH property between Patterson
and San Francisco and that they hod
gone there to "beat up strlkebrakera"
residing at a hotel.
San Francisco police also Investi
gated rumors of a plan to dvnamlte
the hotel, but Cleary said the men
denied any such Intention.
Claary pointed ,out the Standard
