When there has not been a drop for six or eight months, the first rain Is one of the roost thrilling and exciting things In the world. And when It bad struck them, fresh and cold, Ivy and Bowers, de lighting In the sensation, bad i squealed and laughed like two chil dren. But the rain was more than cold. In comparison to the tempera ture In which they had been living. It was icy. Then Bowers sat down on the floor, braced hit shoulders against the side-board of Ivy's bunk, and pushed with his feet The door gave a little. He re doubled his efforts. Sweat burst from every poro In his body. Tho door was yielding, but It had not yielded. "Push down on my knees." he said to Ivy. She pressed down upon them wltb all tho weight that she could bring to bear and suddenly the door burst open, Bowers' knocs straightened, and Ivy fell across them. They had as yet no thought ol treachery, and they got to their feet with a laugh. On their way to the stair, however, Bowers tried the door of bis own cabin and found that this also was locked. So also was the door which opened from the smoking room corridor upon the deck. Three locked doors could not b the result of accident. NovorthoIcsB suspicion was slow to form, and tor a while he pounded on the corridor door and tried to make ills voice heard by those on deck. Meanwhile Ivy waa looking through a tightly closed porthole whose thick dingy glass afforded a . view of the boat-deck. What she saw moved her to anger rather than fear. "They're getting the boate over," she said, "nnd I guess we're beea overlooked." i "The hell we have!" Bower raged, and he hurled himself against the locked door. But this was of massive teak, with hardware to match, and It did not even tremble at the im pact. He Joined Ivy at the porthole, but not much could be seen clearly. The scientists, all delegates to the International congress for radio- biology, saw Professor 8. 8. Mehru and Vishnu Bharma of India join In dem onstrating the "teamwork" of onions and heard another Indian professor, 8. D. Mlsra, enthuse over the curative properties of the humble vegetable. Mehru and Sharma surrounded a growing onion seedling with five onion root, and showed how radia tion emanating from Ihe roots made the seedling grow faster than a simi lar one "working on Its own." Mlsra credited the onion with the sending out of "M rays." which he said are useful In treating pharygltls and nasal catarrah. He cited In stances where necklaces of onions were worn to cure colds. A photoelectric receiver Invented to measure the radiation of onions In certain solutions was demonstrated by Professor Otto Glasser of Cleveland, O. He reported "although some results are considered rather encouraging, we have not yet been able to obtain from this method a systematic series of data which are constant and repro ducable." (AP) Circuit court Judges In Oregon will be paid their full salaries for September, even though the account will be somewhat overdrawn, it was announced today by the department of state. The over draft will be made up by anticipated litigation fees, It was declared. September, however, will be the last month payments can be made to the circuit Judges, due to Insufficient budget allowances for salaries. The legislative appropriation was based on the statutory cuts also enacted, but the law could not compel the Judges to take the cut and the majority of them refused to do so. Judges, protected by a constitu tional provision against reduction, must resort to the next legislature for the back salaries due them up to the first of the year, an amount estimated at about 930,000. Justices of the su preme court, also affected similarly, will be paid Into November, It was reported. . Rat Had hone Necklace. MINERAL SPRINOS, Tex. Out of this total, 363 warn ing were issued. 23 provisional arrests made, and 23 drivers arrested. The purpose of the check was to deter mine the amount and periodical in tensity of traffic, and number of vio lations. On the Redwood highway, No. 199. passenger cars traveling east totaled 535, while westbound passenger cars numbered 452, out of a grand total of 1,104, motor vehicles. The total for the Pacific highway. No. 9t. reach ed 1.976, out of which 934 were pas senger cars headed north, and 883 passenger cars headed south. Other vehicles checked were truck, stages and busses. The check was made In four-hour shifts, with results showing that traf fic was heaviest from 2 to 6 p. m., when 1,086 vehlclea passed the Inter section. From 0 a. m. to 10 a. m.. 724 vehlclea were checked, while from 10 a. m. to 2 p. m. the figures reached 623. Besides the warnings, provisional arrests and arrests, minor violators were reported and foreign licensed motorists were directed to register.
