Hal Halght's Medford Rogues and Ken Williams' Grants Pass Merchants will meet on the local fair grounds diamond today in what will be a crucial game. If not a decisive one. for the Climate City league leaders. Three games remain on this sea son's schedule, and as the Merchants are that number ahead of the second place Rogues, the worst the Grants Pass nine and the best the locals can do Is end the pennant race in a tie. At the same time Grants Pass and Medford are battling it out on the local diamond, Shaw-Bertram will be tangling with Ewauna at Klamath Fall in a double header, the second event scheduled as a replay of the contested June 17 battle. Jack Hughes, former hurler for Grants Pass, will pitch against his old teammates, with Dean Joy doing the receiving. Ken Williams will probably put his league-leading pitcher. Bill Nelson, on the mound for Grants Pass, while Al Droulette will work behind the bat. The Medford American Legion Jun ior baseball team was defeated Sat urday afternoon by Klamath Falls, at Klamath Falls, ft to 4, in a close and exciting game, before a fair sized crowd. The teams were tied at the end of the eighth inning. Two Medford errors, and a hit In the ninth put the winning run across. A high wind, accompanied by dust, swept the dia mond throughout the game. The ele ments proved a handicap to the local Juniors. The two teams were evenly matched. Pepper pitched for the Medford Juniors. Regular townies met, for the second time, ageing hasbeens of Jack sonville who, 10 years ago, were the class of southern Oregon. With Leonard (Beanball) Hall on the mound for the Miners, and Ernie Mclntyre for the Merchants, the game settled down to a steady battle of errors and banter. Hall, Miner man ager, made his first appearance as a pitcher and ascended the mound clad In belly protector and catcher's mask, but shut his opponents out to four scattered hits for the game, while Mclntyre surrendered seven safeties. Hall, however, walked seven men and hit two In the tendon of Achilles, which spoke well for his control, ad mitted victims. He managed to whiff three while his rival moundsman struck out an equal number but walked only three. Hall e "Beanball" moniker was gained when his throws reminded the Merchants of Mexican Jumping beans. One of the features of the game came when Howard La n ter man. (AP) William Hickman Pickens, whose pro motion effort sent a parade of fa mous figures from Henry Ford to Suzanne Lenglen across the Inter national horizon for almost a score of years, was dead today. Blood poisoning, Indirectly result ing from his last and perhaps fin ancially most successful venture the 500-mile road stock-car race here last winter took his life yesterday. Pickens' name was associated with many of the pioneers of automobile racing, balloon flying, airplane stunt ing, foot races and professional foot ball and tennis. He was born In Birmingham, Ala,, 00 year ago. In the late nineties hs started promoting bicycle races after begin ning his career as a competitor in the sport. By 1900 he had Jumped to horseless carriages and soon be came associated with a daring young 'speed maniac." Beginner are Instructed from 1 to 3. Intermediates from 3 to 3, and swimmers from 3 to 4 p. m. Life saving classes are held In the swim mers' course, and awards are to be given those who pass tests to be held next Thursday. Stanley Stevens has taken charge temporarily of the American Legion second baseball league, which prac tices every morning from 0 to 11 a. m. at the Jackson school diamond in the place of Alexander LeVon, regular coach.
