Luncheon was served to 125 guests on the terrace and In the house with student and former students of Valley school, gay In sunbonnets and colorful aprons, acting as wait resses. ",Tie hostesses, Mrs. I. E. Schuler, Mrs. Louis Salade and Mrs. Carpenter, were assisted by the Misses Prances and Harriett Sparrow, who. directed the corps of waitresses, made up of Misses Helene Salade, Bannle Hunt, Nancy Clark, Patsy Thompson and Ann Scherer. Julie Carpenter in Guatemala costume, acted as cigar ette girl. Candy was sold during the afternoon by the other younger Val - ley school girls. There were 33 tables of bridge In play following luncheon and the grand prizes for the afternoon went to Mrs. Karl Janouch and Mrs. Myron Boot. . - - prizes were also awarded the win ners at each table and these went to Mesdames Clare H. Armstrong, Burdette Dodge, J. C. Mann, Robert Norrls, Jack Spalding, Harold J or dan, J. 0, B. Wellls, W. S. Bo Igor H. S. Deuel, Gordon Voorhles, Myron Root, Emerson Merrick, W. W. Illinois Valley Club Entertains at Flower Show Friday ' afternoon members and friends of the Modford -Gsrden olub were delightfully entertained at Kerby by the Illinois Valley Garden club. Members of that club had. hunted the hillsides for rare and unusual wild flowers which were on exhibi tion, and at the close of the meeting each guest was presented a plant for his own garden. Mrs. Lincoln Savage of Grants Pass named fcbe flowers and gave a short talk on preserving them. Mrs. Homer White, a pioneer of Josephine county and a recognized authority, also gave a short talk on Lewslas, exhibiting a number of rare specimens. Those who went from Medford were Mr. and Mrs. T. Mistletoe Club Honors Mrs. Hartle Mistletoe club, met Wednesday afternoon for a surprise party on Mrs. John Hartle at her home on Clark street. Following regular busi ness cards were enjoyed. Neighbor Cora Lewis, a veteran member of 32 years read a poem, "Why I Love You, Royal Neighbors" which was much enjoyed. Mrs. Lewis has an unusual record of keeping every receipt of payment of dues and assessments during the entire term of member ship. Also the record of , faithful attendance and discharge of duties pertaining to the offices which she has filled. Mrs. Bates Visits Sister in Valley An Interesting guest In the valley this week end Is Mrs. Douglas Bates of Portland, state president of the Presbyterian synodlcal, who Is visit ing her sister, Mrs. E. E. Meyer of Lake Creek. Mrs. Bates, the former Mabel Gould lived In Medford before her marriage, and was. prominently associated with church and musical activities here. She came here last week from Kla math Falls, where she had been con ducting meetings, and will leave to night for Baker, where arte will con duct another church gathering. The devotional and study periods were both under the leadership of Miss Helen Carlton, with the scrip ture lesson taken from the fifth chapter of Matthew, and singing In concert of a hymn and prayer by Miss Fhipps in conclusion. Mrs. W A. Holloway sang as a solo number, "Holy Spirit." The lesson topic, "Leadership,1 giving a definite solution of the great accomplishment, built on Godly foundation, was the basis of Miss Carlton's talk. This was follow ed with brief stories of "Howard Home" In New Melco, "Educational Colleges" In the south, "Wesleyan University" of Chattanooga, Tenn., from wilch ten thousand have gone out Into the world to take their places, a large number holding posl tlons of Influence and responsibility; "Rust Hall," Holly Springs, Miss., and "Georgia Robinson School" in Porto Rico. Under the supervision of Mrs GlUIngs, mite box secretary, a mite box skit was portrayed by the fol lowing women: Mrs. Knotts, Mrs, Koppen, Mrs. Arnsplger, Mrs. Bliss, Mrs. Tucker, and Mrs. Lyman. At the regular monthly meeting in Mny, mite box opening will be held, which applies on the appor tionment. Also there will be an of fering for the "Old People's Home" In Salem. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. Wiley and Miss Phipps, served refreshments during the social half hour. Benefit Bridge Tea At Academny To Be Wednesday The annual spring benefit for St. Mary's academy, anticipated each year by many society folk with s yen for cards, will be In the form of a bridge tea Wednesday afternoon, April 18. Pocahontas Lodge Enjoys Dancing The Pocahontas members and their friends enjoyed an evening ot dancing on Friday the 13th, with Dickey's orchestra furnishing the music. The hall was decorated In the spring motif of yellow and green. The committee responsible was Nellie Purdln, Esther Dooms ana Jack Dooms. Refreshments were served by Bernlce Wilson, Mabel Quackenbush and Ed mere Watson. Next Friday evening, April 20, tha Past Pocahontas' will have charge of the meeting. Study Club Travels to Africa Via Lectures A very interesting meeting of th Travel Study club was held Monday afternoon at the home of Mrs. A. . Clement on West Main street. Mrs. A. J. Hanby ably presented her paper on "Monuments of Ancient Egypt and Romance of Excavation. Egypt did not have any beginning or starting point known, being the only country In civilization that hasn't a recorded beginning. However, all types and lives of ancient peoples are revealed on stone and rthe ancient tombs carry many interesting facts which make them valuable and ro mantic and Mrs. Hanby In her pre sentation carried members to these tombs In a realistic manner. Mrs. A. R. Hedges gave the book review, "The Lion," by Martin John son, and introduced the Johnsons and their beautiful home at Nlrobie, Africa, and their activities. The Johnsons have done much to- bring the picture tof the African Jungles to Americans, but while they shoot the animals with the camera they seldom shoot a Hon or any other anlmat for sport and when they do they are very apologetic about It, saying it has not long on this earth anyway, or something to that effect.
