The Sams Valley quintet, a group of daz zling sharpshooters, will challenge the winner of the Medford-Ashland lames this week. Central Point had been generally Slven the edge to take the valley players, but failed to live up to their nast season record which had not been marred by defeat. Nervousness and anxiety to take the county cham pionship of the secondary schools are largely attributed to the Pointers' defeat. C. P. Takes Early Lead. Central' Point took an early lead of 7 to 4 at the end of the first quarter and Increased It to 18 to 4 during the second quarter, but at the end of the first half, the lead was cut to 15 to IS. The teams battled hard during the aecond half. Central- Point lead' Ing Sams Valley by a point only to fall behind by one point. The lead would be regained only to be lost again by a single counter. The game stood t 26 to 34 against the Pointers for a few minutes, but Sams Valley again made a field goal while their opponents were able to , garner only one more basket before the game ended. VnlleyltM Wlrarfl Shots. Before the final whistle, the Valley quintet sank two or three more bas nrt y free throw to make a total of 33. Central Point, which had won Saturday night by a score of 36 to 15. was unable to hit a winning stride and missed numerous attempts. The Sams Valley basketeera made field goals from uncanny distances and angles, with Dusenberry making one almost from the center of the floor. The Valley boys are coached by O. W. Ayres, while Mickey McGulrc has been handling the Pointers the past season. The lineups: S. Hawley has decided not to b i candidate for congress at the next election, the Oregon Statesman said this morning. The continued illness of Mrs. Hawley led to his decision, the paper stated. Hawley represented this district in the national congress for 36 years until 1033 when he was succeeded by James W. Mott, who won the Republi can nomination In a close race In 1032. (AP) Seven high ranking contract bridge experts today announced a new method of valuation of a hand. "This table has been tested by us through months of successful rubber and tournament play and has been found to be 100 per cent accurate," said a statement signed by David Burnstlne, Richard L. Prey, Michael T. Qottlleb, Oswald Jacoby, Howard Schenken, Edward Hsmes, Jr., and Waldemar von Zedtwltz, An act has a value of 3; a king 3, a queen 1 and a Jack Vi- The total high card value of the pack Is 36 and the average hand has a value of 0 Vi Depending on distribution, the bid ding Is not opened, especially In first or second position, unless the hand has a value of 0 or 9, It takes a count of 11 to open the auction with one no trump. SEATS ADDED AS Because the past few wrestling cards at the armory have caused a sell-out of seats on the main floor, Promoter Mack LUlard announced to day thnt he Is arranging for addi tional ringside seats for next Thurs day's show. The high class matches being staged here weekly have gained a great following among the fans and the grip and gronn Industry Is now enjoying the greatest popularity ever experienced locally. In next Thuradny'a show l Grimes, Australian star, will try to fasten his combination scissors and arm hold on Lea Wolfe, the Texan, while the latter will be looking for a chance to hook his roll ing scissors on the man from down under. The pair will wrestle in one half of the dual main event. with Jack Kogut, Toronto, and Charlie Hanson, Seattle In the other half. Ashland Jun ior high took third place by winning from Eagle Point, 38-38. In the games Friday night Rogue River beat Ash land Junior high, 17-14, and Oold Hill won from Eagle Point, 33-33. After the championship game Sat urday evening the Oold Hill Garden elub entertained players and their coaches at a banquet served at the Odd Follows hall. Between 40 and SO players, coaches and members of the Oold Hill chamber of commerce, sponsors of the tournament, attended. BATTLE DRAW IN HIGH SPEED BOUT San Francisco Boy Makes Good Showing Against Lightweight Champion 10,000 Fans Cheer Go BAN PHANCISCO. March 6. (AP) Prankie Kllck, sturdy little ring charger of San Francisco, who holds the junior lightweight title, hsd a 10 round draw to his credit today with Barney Ross of Chicago, world's light weight champion. Ross' lightweight crown was not at stake. In the face of 34 odds favoring Ross, the showing of the San Fran cisco boy in making a close battle of it was one of the highlights of a ring setto last night that had 10,000 fana cheering wildly from start to finish. Kllck', stirring rallies In the last two rounds apparently Influenced Referee Toby Irwin's decision to call It an even affair. Ringside experts varied In their opinions. The Asso ciated Press' score sheet gave Ross five rounds, with four to Kllck and one even. They went through the 10 rounds at top speed. Ross' boxing was clearly superior, but he was unable to perfect a good defense against his opponent's solid rights to the bady. The Chlcagoan's left side was bruised and battered after the bout. Although he won the 130-pound title from Kid Chocolate, Kllck out weighed Ross at 138 pounds to 137 . Ross la recognized as Junior welter weight tltleholder In, Illlnola end California and he risked this syn thetic crown which Kllck failed to lift. After a fairly even first session. Kllck landed cleaner punches to take the second. Ross outboxed his rival to win the next four and the eighth. The San Franciscan had an edge in the seventh, ninth and tenth with Jolting body blows.
