Curt end hie partner Paul know that at anon aa Sonya teavee with LeNoir, Karakhan'a contact man, LeNoir will aend the remoraelraa Kloaohee Indian to dettroy them. Chapter 35 DEPARTURE CL HT atood up and gave Sonya bis hand to rise. As his glance met hers he saw tears In her eyes, an her lips trembling. "All right. Curt," she said quietly, with a hu mility that shamed blra. She glanced down at the ground, started to say something more, checked her self and turned away to ber tent. He thrust the clips Into bis pocket and walked up to tbe little stone fort which he and Paul had rolled to gether. Paul was carefully Inspect ing It and plugging chinks so that no arrows could sift through. They did not count on bavlng to nse tbe defense; but their situation was delicate, LeNoir was a crafty fellow, and It was wise to guard against the unforeseen. At the uppor Up ot the Island Ralph was sitting at the water edge occasionally drawing In a fish on tbe band-line bo was holding. He looked lonely and disconsolate. Curt won dered whether Sonya had really told him tbe truth about ber trip. Ralph was an unselfish soul, but to bring tbe girl be loved Into that country and help her Join another man seemed a bit too self-effacing even for blm. Probably she had spun iiloi some lie. As he brought Paul an extra rock he was startled by tbe low quavering call of an owl six hundred yards out upon tba lake. He dropped tbe rock, stood listening. LeNoir? It touldn't be; tbe red. star was nearly two hours high. But then tbe call came again, no nearer but louder; and he distinctly caught the Blaetto quality of It. "Hell I It Is LeNoir, Paul I He's some early for her." Paul nodded. "Yes, It's be. Slam Klala and be must want to get the a-hole business over wltb tonight! They crouched down behind the rocks and waited. Curt's eyes were ipon tbe tent, where Sonya would eome out He bad not Imagined thai tier going would be an oideal, be had iven thought he would take a sav- ige pleasure In being free of ber tor good; but now when she actually was leaving, It seemed Impossible to let her go, . When she stepped outside the tent md looked around cautiously to see where Paul and be were, he rose up overwhelmed by the Impulse to go lown there and keop her from lent tag. Paul checked blm, took a part or tbe burden of decision upon blm self. "Don't, partnerl You'd be sorry Let ber leave. She'll be In no dan ger. Remember, we are following her and can sea that she gets safely out." Sonya hurried on down the Island In tbe owl dusk her slender form grew fainter and fainter till Curt no longer saw her. A canoe grated on the pea-gravel as she tugged at the craft to got It afloat. A dark blur moved away fiom shore. Curt cov red bis face with his hands to abut out the sight of It. When he looked BP again, the blur was gone. tones; and that Jocku had acted queerly when he came to make bis request. Now be saw through this whole ruse. Their trips after a cari bou bad been a scheme to secure a canoe and get away. Those two had desorted! He whirled the canoe around and started back to camp, swearing at the evil luck that dogged every step he took. The treachery of those na tives was little short of disaster. He had counted heavily on them to take Ralph back soutb; and now they had sneaked away, the pair of cowards, and Nichols was left on his hands. If he and Paul were encumbered with Ralph on their swift shadowy trip, they would not stand a ghost ot a chance. Before he had gone very far he heard a rifle shot down stream. He stopped short, listened. A mile south, down where the river nar rowed to a bottle neck, a flurry of shots sounded. The dull thud of the guns was unmistakable tbe heavy bear Winchesters of Jocku and Frangols. Those two guides were In trouble; they'd run Into an am bush! One of the Winchesters suddenly stopped. The other shot four times more. Then, faintly In the taut si lence, a long-drawn yell watted up river, more a scream than any ar ticulate word. Piercing, vibrant with terror, It sent shivers through Curt It was a man'a death cry. All his anger changed to heartfelt pity. "Poor devilsl'"he said softly. "They got It Tbe Klosohee,- aid a . parly at that narrows, to cut us off If we tried to break away." HE whipped on ashore, goaded by the memnrv nf that firv. (AP) Secretary Wallace said today ha had received telegrams from 16 senators. 18 representatives and 13 governors supporting the plan for production adjustment in the dairying and beef cattle Industries. The plan, suggested to Wallace by a conference of farm leaders Friday, calls for an appropriation of 9200, 000,000 at the next session to fi nance aid for milk producers and beef cattle farmers. STAND ON OWN ET PHILADELPHIA, Dec. 28. (API W. I. Myers, governor of the federal farm credit administration, predicted today that became of the "compleu system of farm credit" set up by th government, agriculture for the first time will be able to finance Itself. His prediction was contained In a. paper read before the convention of the American Farm Economic associ ation by P. P. Hill, of Cornell unt veralty, who Is associated with Myers In the credit administration's work. S'MATTER POP- By C..M. PAYNE PAUL touched bis arm, moments afterward. "We'd bettor he somewhere else In sn hour from now. This Island la going to have visitors." Curt pulled himself together. "Yea, we'd better go," he said Jerk ily. "We'll take what we need of our outfit and get away to one of these other Islands, and then split op." "Francois and Jocku haven't come hack." Curt turned toward the carlbon Island, barely visible In the docp dusk. It just then occurred to him that be had not heard the guides shoot Their silence waa strange; they had been gone long enough to make two such trips. Ha hurried to the lower end. launched the remaining canoe and darted down lake. A few rods off shore he cnlled In a guarded voice: "Jocku! You and Francois get out of there. Come alive! We bsvtn'l any time to wsste." No answer came back. Ills voice sent tha- Utile band of caribou tear Ing through the swamp birch to the other aide of the Island, but neither Francois nor Jocku answorcd. The explanation dawned on him with a crash. Ho remembered, too late, that the guides had sat off by themselves all day, talking In in- bad beard it too, and knew what It meant Working swiftly, they made ready to leave. Thoy left the tents standing, abandoned most of the supplies and all the heavier things: took nothing but guns, blanketa and food for a few daya. "Carry this stuff to tbe canoe," Curt directed. "I'll go get Ralph." As he hurried up the Island, he tried to figure how he might salvage something out of the wreckage of his plana. Perhaps they could taka Ralph several miles up some tribu tary river where the Klosohees were not likely to come, and secrete him In some cave, with food and camp necessities, to be picked up later when they bad An. shed wltb Karak- han. It was possible. Ralph! Come along wltb me. We're pitching away from this place on tbe Jump." Ralph got up quickly. "Why, what's the matter?" I'll tell you later. Let's get Into the canoe and put distance between us." Whoro's Sonya?" Ralph queried. winding up bla fish line. "Don t ask questions now. man. for Lord's sake! And let that line go. Come on, we're leaving here" He bit the aontence off. Out upon the lake to the west a "merganser" called. Front north and south came nnawera. Curt stared In the direction of that first call. For a moment be aaw nothing. Then bla eyea picked up Bve blurred mottlea. out at tbe limit of vision. He peered sharply at them. Canoes: Five Klosohce canoes! He spun around with Ralph and ran down toward Paul. It only they could get out upon the lake, they might make a running battle of II and lose themselves In a maze ol reedy Islets half a mile east At the lower tip of the Island his partnor'a gun ripped tbe night si lence with a sharp cr-aa-ck. When he reached Paul, the latter was kneeling down and clipping a fresh magazine Into bla smoking rifle. "Look I" Paul grabbed his arm "Six of them! Coming In at us!" Curt looked where he pointed Three hundred yards offshore hall a doien sinister shadows were loom ing out of the dunk. Paul's volley had checked Ibelr headlong dash, tbey had acnttered to make the target harder; but they were comlns straight on, aiming for that lowei tip "Lot i thoy've got naf" Curl gaopo-l. Before they could possibly get their ennoo launched and out ol thoshnllo-vs. those dancing shadows woull ha upon them. By a margin ot mluutM. the precious mlntilei lost la hunting for Jocku and Fran cols, ticy had railed to get away. A Tow stray arrows, already swish Ing Into th sand around them, em phaslzed the point "Let's get back to our rocks," he ordered. "Nothing to do now bul shoot It out." They turned and ran for the shel ter. (Copyrlht. 1JJ1. rnlliam B.
