Noel Cow ard's Influence on manners Is hilar iously revealed In that' revue.- Even the chambermaids and wait ers in a hotel where he is a guest affect his speech and loose walk. Zaz Hitchcock Is as beautiful as ever she was. And as charming. Burns and Allen always seem to be twittering that way on the street, too. Nobody can barge along like Heywood Broun. Ona Munson, a Minneapolis, Minn., girl, who made good In the city. No magazine editor appears to get so much rollicking fun out of life as Harold Ross. Mrs. Arthur Bom ers Roche's Dutch bob. Percy Ham mond calls the Dorothy Parker crowd "the charade and anagram set." One of my favorite people Robert Rubin. Technicolor couldn't photo graph that sartorial splash of Mickey Netlan'a green shirt with a salmon pink tie. When that Frances Mad dux sings a noisy speakeasy all Of a sudden becomes a sedate drawing room. And that's artl Prize fighters are notoriously shy of humor. Nearly all catch a joke on the third bounce. Imagine Car nera fielding a fast one I The 'ex ception Is Jack Dempsey, who Is still a practical Joker. Two days before one of his championships he appear ed for a sparring work-out with his left arm bandaged and in splints. Everybody In the training squad turned oyster white. Dempsey, sim ulating agony, went through the paces, poking awkwardly with his In jured fin. Suddenly receiving a light Jab, he went spinning around the ring In cart wheels. It was expert comedy. The .most striking natural resemb lance the theatre has seen since a fellow of forgotten name burlesqued Caruso In a Follies Is that of Tom my Hamilton to the Prince of Wales at the Music Box. He has Davld'a face, walk, talk and hair brush to a T. In casting circles "a natural." The Guild vf Autograph Hounds at first night has embellished their odd calling with a new co-operation. Along the curbs out-riders pee' nt0 limousines and megaphone the names of celebrities through their hands to the hyena half circle at the en trances. Calling: "Tallulah Bank head 1" Or : "Howard O h a n d le r Christy." Thus mostr notables de bouch from their herdics In a spot light huzzah. The most consistent non-autographlst is Ina Claire. When Nunnally Johnson was first called to Hollywood to labor on his film script, he spent three months around the studios while others dis sected and reassembled his brain child. One morning at one of those dreary, meaningless conferences, Johnson clapped his hands and sat up with a perk. "I remember now." he beamed. "I came out here to work on my play." Otla Skinner is among the few sterling actors who Is an Incurable trouper. He prefers the road with sleeper Jumps and uncomfortable ho tels to a New York run, his com fortable home and admiring cronies at the Players. This season he i swashbuckling in the provinces with a. high class revival of "Uncle Tom's Cabin.' And reverses the usual hog glshneas of stars for top billing. Communications To th Klitor: I promised a careful survey of our Ux budgU ind hU t)t them la th order in which the public her lrwi in held, which brlngi the txhoal budget first. I have tried to be particularly care ful In looking over th!a budget, be cause of the many etorlea I have heard tn regard to school affatra. and I want to be absolutely fair to everyone. First, we must realize that we went hog-wild on building churchea and schools, and t know that at least as far as some churches are concerned the estimated cost of building wn exceeded twice over. These things have to be paid for and add enormoue ly to church and school budgets. ' I tried lo find n audit of last year's opera:liu etpenws to compare with lsst years budjet. but find that none waa taken, but I did compare the year before and find that they do compare very well. The old pho tograph above shows a campaign In progress before the door of one or the town's emporiums. HILLSBORO, Ohio. (AP) To the survivors of that "praying band'' of 70 women who nurtured the organ ized the temperance movement here In 1873, national prohibition is not a failure despite the march of repeal. They're Not Dlmnnyed Those who can see from their front porches the scene of their early con quest of liquor are Mrs. Deander Detwller, Mrs. Eliza West, Mrs. Kate Doggett, Mrs. Levlna Dill and Mrs. Elizabeth Marshall. On the other Ride of the Continent are Mrs. Robert Duffey and Mrs. J. K. Pickering. The "praying band" gave the Wo men s Christian Temperance Union, which came upon the scene a year later, lte anthem: "Give to the winds Its fears; Hope and be undismayed higher than last year, but I find $3,000 more for interest In warrants and $1,600 more for Insurance. It seems to me there are entirely too" many loose Items of expense, not particularly specified, such as "Other Expense," "Supplies," "Maintenance and Repairs," "Replacements," total ing around (50.000. If this could be specified like, for Instance, our city fire department wants two l-lnch nozzles, cost (30, then If we don't want them to have them we say "no." There Is one fact about our school system that makes our expenses seem terribly high, and Chat la that out of our six schools we have built and are practically maintaining the same as one of them completely free of charge to outside or tuition puplla and ou rschool board Is powerless to act. Summing up the entire tax situa tion from the taxpayers' point of view. It amounts to a good big interest on our property Investments and makes a problem that we are simply unable to meet. The schools as well as other public expense absolutely cannot be met by us and we are going to see an enormous amount of tax fore closures In the next three years. The budgets should all be trimmed to the very bone, and this is not being done by our schools. In closing, I want to voice a sincere appreciation to our superintendent, Mr. Hedxick. for allowing his salary to be reduced (900. GEO. IVERSON.
