PXGE FOmrTEES JIEDFOTiD MAIL" TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON, FRIDXT, SEPTEMBER I, 1933. Ikz. HIDDEN DOOR BY FRANK L. PACKARD .4.. . UliH HOWttt, ,!!- trrii writer, ia acouring Haw York dietmeed aa Clarkia l.unn.a crook, 'or a trara ot the Uaak. The Uaak ia ctar ot tha underworld, and ba aidea haa threatened Coltn'a Ufa. Butuh Connal haa tipped Colin off to tha fact that Captain Dollalre, rum runner who raided tha Uaek'a counterfeiting plant on tha Bi. Lawrence Wm, ia tn New York. at Splnelll'a night club. A auppoaadly drunk man at Spinelli'a bar haa deecrlbed Dollaira and Beimia Schwarm, to whom Dollaira hopee to aell a cargo of rum. Ilia "drunk" ia ona of Butch'a mot. Chsptsr tl ENTER HEIMIC rTHM bsjkD ni bick. Hs grinned at Colin u tha "drunk" lurched awajr. "What's hli nmr aaked Colin, "Peter K. MacBrlde." The bar keep'i grin broadened. "Didn't he wish card on yon?" Colin snook his head. "No. Have I been neglected?" , "We sweep 'cm up of the floor In the morning," confided the barkeep wu.n a laugh. "He carries a pocket ful around with him. But he's all right Then he's sober. Got a bit of money, so ther say retired or something." "Well, I think I'll blow smiled Colin. "When be comes back tell him I had a telephone call." He swung away from the bar, left the room, and began to make his way downstairs. Feter K. MacBrlde, whatever hla real name might be, was obriously one of Batch's "In side" men a "feeder" for the gang. And MacBrlde'a warning was ring ing in nis ears. How much, or how little, Mac Brlde already knew, or whether the man had only "sensed" something in tne air, mattered little. That, In MacBrlde'a words, bell would bust loose here before the night was oyer, was exactly what be, Colin, was expecting and he was quite sure In bis own mind that he could bare told MacBrlde why! His own plans? He bad none ex eept to watch Dollaira and be guld ed by circumstances. Dollaira was tha bait. Hls,.Colln's, Job was to see who snatched at ltl Colin reached tha entrance to the dance ball and paused for a mo ment In the doorway amongst what seemed tha erer-present knot of people who stood there peering In. A "turn" was on. Ha bad seen It before. A girl was covering the floor with prodigious leaps and bounds but very little covered the girl. Spl- nelll called It his psychlo dance. COLIN'S eyes roamed around the room and cams to rest almost Immediately on Kelmls Schwann, whom ha Identified without hsslts tlon from MacBrlde'a description, At the table beside the boots baron was a stocky, powerfully built, black. haired man Dollaira, of course. . They were sitting, as MacBrlde bad said, In ona of tha "stalls" near tha door, a bottle ot champagne be tween them. Colin smiled crypti cally. Splnelll never overlooked a bat that meant a little extra profit Tha "stalls" were nothing more than ratled-oft spaces on a slightly raised platform that waa built around three sides ot the room, bnt they possessed comfortable lounge chairs and tba view was better, so why should not a small fee be charged for their use? Splnelll charged It, But they were popular. Most ot them were occupied tonight. Colin moved forward Into the room. Ha contented himself with a table on the floor level not tar from tha boosa baron's stall ha could watch Dollaira, not only unobtru sively, but much better from bere than from a stall. Again his eyes roamed around the room. The tables, three deep, that separated the space reserved for dancing from tha stalls were fairly well occupied too. Splnelll would be able to declare a dividend tonlghtl He ordered a bottle ot wine, and sipped It leisurely. Applause greeted aeveral suggestive numbera on Spl aelll's programme. Colin saw little ct them. The minutes and the quarter-hours slipped by. Helmle (Schwann and Dollaira bad become little uproarious, though not offen sively 10. Had the deal been perfected? Had Helmle Schwarm become the owner of a choice cargo from St. Pierre and Mlquelon? It mattered little. They were attacking another bottle ot champagne. Helmle Schwarm bad paid tor It from a huge wad ot bills that ha had wrenched, because ot Us bulk, with no little difficulty from bis pocket. "pHB Dutchman's combination of straw hair, brilliant red tie, and Inch-square checked suit ot light (awn as a color scheme struck a dis tinctly bilious note. Dollalrt, swarthy, beetle-browed, narrow eyed, with thin, hard lips and pro truding Jaw, was the reverse of be ing prepossessing. And then, as he watched the two, a line point of ethics sroee In Colln's mind to trouble him. Believing that Dollaira was in Immediate danger, had he any right to sit here and not warn tha man? Mentally be began to debate the pros and cons. What could he say to Dollalre? Kothlng definite but enough, say, to cause Dollalre to take alarm and 5 ,riL a d Stalls i x Gf His own plsns? He hsd none. leave the place, Well, what thon? If the Mask had Dollaira under sur veillance here, Dollalre would be no better oft outside than In, Dollalre had gratuitously thrown hla hat Into tha ring. He had de stroyed one of the Mask's pet schemes, and had murdered at least two for Laxarra might still be alive of the Mask's men. It Colin know the Mask at all, Dollalre, whether he were put on the spot here or elsewhere, was a doomed man from the night he had rnlded the club on the Cascade River. Dollalre was a callous, cold blooded murdorer boasting his prowess. One's finer Instincts re volted even at the thought ot his ex istence. Warn Dollalre? It the Mask or any ot his men were here to see, then Clarkte Lunn might ns well never have been created. He had not come bere to warn Dollalre; he had come here to watch the Mask play his hand. - There were Germalne, himself, their future, his own life at stake. Ethlcsl Ills lips tightened. Was It sthlcs to fling all that aside on the chance of being able to accomplish what, at tha utmost, could be na more than a postponement ot the In evltable showdown between the Mask and Dollalre? Suppose he were writing It? An grily he sought to fling tha sudden intrusion aside but It persisted. One always had to Justify the hero's actions. Would tha hero bo Justified In the readers' eyes It he stood pat ndor these circumstances? "By Qod." Colin stated fiercely to himself, "I'd write It that way, any how!" A waiter stood at his elbow. "Pardon me, sir. There's a couple of gentlemen over tuoro that would like you to Join them." tCtpyrtght, tts, Frank L. Packard) Tomorrow.
