Deaireoie nouses I'war m nr. class condition foe rent, lease ot taw Call 100, In Justice to Themselves They Should Step Aside TE heartily approve of the Tidings, that County Judge Fehl and Sheriff Sehermer- horn resign, so that peace may and this everlasting strife and Such action should he taken ials not only in justice to themselves, but in justice to the people of Jackson County. Begardless of the outcome there is no doubt whatever of That Judge Fehl, in the minds of the right-thinking people of Jackson County, has disqualified himself, to serve them further in any judicial capacity, until the ballot destruction case is cleared up. That whoever were guilty house and the destruction of the ballots, this crime WAS com mitted and Sheriff Schermerhorn was, and is, the beneficiary of it. AS conditions now exist the positions of county judge and sheriff are extremely important, in the matter of exoner ating the innocent and bringing the guilty to justice. These offices should therefore be occupied by individuals WHO ARE ABOVE ALL SUSPICION, and can have no selfish interest to serve. PIE impropriety of Judge Fehl holding office at such a time, is clearly demonstrated, by his attempt to take dras tic judicial action, in a case in which he is HIMSELF IN-' VOLVED. As a member of not only has he refused to make any publio statement con demning this orime against good government, but in his offic ial acts, endeavoring to assume authority in this case, he has clearly indicated his sympathies are with those suspected of having committed the most serious crime against orderly gov- ernment and constituted authority, in the history of Southern Oregon. SUCH A SITUATION IS INDEFENSIBLE AND INTOLER ABLE. The suggestion of the Ashland Tidings, . shows dearly what the sentiment in that part of the oounty is. We are certain the same sentiment county at large. THIS SUGGESTION, INVOLVES NO ASSUMJT1UJN U' GUILT. It rests solely upon what is best for Jackson County and its people at the present time, and what we honestly be lieve, will be the best for the two Such action would not only tion of law and order, the prompt attainment of justice; but it would demonstrate to all, and Judge Fehl, are willing to do their share, in restoring peace and harmony to this sadly harassed community, at the earliest possible time, and as interested parties are glad to step out, SO THAT MAY BE DONE ! An Excellent THE appointment of James H. Owen, Mrs. R. E. Green, Alfred S. V. Carpenter and State Senator George Dunn as members of the Jackson County relief committee, to serve with the members of the county oourt, should do three neces sary things: Take relief work out of politics and local dissension. Put relief work on a practical, business-like basis. Assure food and shelter for our own people, and discourage outsiders flocking here to be supported in idleness by our already overburdened taxpayers. This committee of seven will of the oounty, the northern part, most thickly populated district, All the members are known oitizens, who have had practical experience in welfare work, and have not been prominently identified with either faction. which has torn this ' community With fodcrnl funds soon available, with the winter nearly' over, the naming of suoh a representative committee should mean that every worthy case of need in Jackson County will be properly and adequately attended to. No Cause THE declaring of this bank holiday, was necessitated by conditions OUTSIDE, not inside this state. The banks here and throughout Oregon are just as strong now as before this action was taken. That this truth is generally shown throughout the state yesterday, when a vast majority of the banks opened for business, and there were no runs, no excitement. It is a time for all people, with their own interests at heart, to keep their heads, and remain oalm. Those who don't, will invite the very situation they wish to avoid. For the fear complex is contagious and destructive. Une man yelling "fire" in a orowded may precipitate a disaster. But the SAME man, at the ple to be calm and file out slowly, This is a time, for all good courage and loyalty and restraint, not only for the welfare of this state, but booause any other attitude is not only dan gerous but entirely UNWARRANTED, by the conditions whioh actually exist - Reese Creek REE8K CREEK. Far be It from this columnist to take exception columnist aaya, to what any other It la bad for the publio health and the fellow A&ys It too sol emnly. I like hu mor when I be lieve folks do not take It seriously. The man tells his readers about a ride some one gave him In a car that has the latest wrinkle In ventilation. B e reports that you can adjust the circulation of air In the car so that back draughts are prevented. So far we can find no fault with It. But then the gentle man goes on to assure us that back draughts start millions of colds, es pecially in older people, by chilling the back of the neck. Not content with that Invasion of the health columnist's field this omniscient one Informs us that doc tors will be Interested In this new wrinkle for their patients sake. Finally the mentor of millions as serts that the common cold Is the cause and the beginning of numer ous fatal Illnesses. In short, he tells virtually every thing the wiseacre population likes to believe Is so. Who knows, perhaps some day this great philosopher will tell the doctors what the common cold Is. No doctor or health author ity dares to tell, even If he thinks he knows. Not until technocracy rules the world will anybody know where de sirable ventilation leaves off and a draught begins. No one can draw the line between a current of fresh air that la ventilation and a draught "Aside from the smug notions of a lot of old fogy physicians there" Is not even a consensus of opinion upon what constitutes an objectionable draught. Every little mind has a no tion of Its own about that, and the notion of the eminent physician or the health officer Is of no greater weight than yours ot mine. We cannot continue as In the last two weeks with strife and discord predominant In county affairs. The Dally Tidings at this time suggeats the TEMPORARY retirement from public office of those officials, both elective and appointed, who have been charged with Implication In the si- leged theft of oounty ballots on the eve of an ordered recountthe de struction of valuable evidence in a court matter as well as the violation of the seoredness of the ballot bos. No man is guilty until he is proved guilty. Our sugeetton that these public officials retire doea not neces sarily mean our belief In their guilt of the charges made against them. Wa are thinking of the welfare of Jackson county, and this, we believe, should be the primary consideration of public officials. Charges brought against Sheriff Schermerhorn and County Judge Katl H. Fehl are gravely se-lous. Despite the teat that a man is innocent un ness. If you have some chronic dla- ease such as enronic nroncmus. chronlo rhinitis, chronic nephritis, prostatic obstruction. For comfort's sake the ventilation of an automobile or any other vehicle In which people ride should be the best the engineers can contrive. But It seems unfair to the great automo tive Industry to blame the automo bile for "millions of Illnesses, Rather, I should say, the old family bus. backdraught or no draught, has contributed much toward better pub lic health records In the past 30 years. Dllle Co.) til he Is proved guilty, the very fact that charges are lodged against him make It difficult for him to continue In public office because of the doubt which somehow naturally exists. Possibly, through their associations with those who have been outspoken In their dissatisfaction with the reg ularly constituted authorities of gov ernment, these public officials have placed themselves In thla most em barrassing, (to say the least) position.
