Or use them both ai they may wish.

mitted and Sheriff Schermerhorn was, and is, the beneficiary
of it.
AS conditions now exist the positions of county judge and
sheriff are extremely important, in the matter of exoner
ating the innocent and bringing the guilty to justice. These
offices should therefore be occupied by individuals WHO ARE
ABOVE ALL SUSPICION, and can have no selfish interest to
serve.
PIE impropriety of Judge Fehl holding office at such a
time, is clearly demonstrated, by his attempt to take dras
tic judicial action, in a case in which he is HIMSELF IN-'
VOLVED. As a member of
not only has he refused to make any publio statement con

clearly indicated his sympathies are with those suspected of
having committed the most serious crime against orderly gov-
ernment and constituted authority, in the history of Southern
Oregon.
SUCH A SITUATION IS INDEFENSIBLE AND INTOLER

THE appointment of James H. Owen, Mrs. R. E. Green,
Alfred S. V. Carpenter and State Senator George Dunn
as members of the Jackson County relief committee, to serve
with the members of the county oourt, should do three neces
sary things:
Take relief work out of politics and local dissension.
Put relief work on a practical, business-like basis.
Assure food and shelter for our own people, and discourage
outsiders flocking here to be supported in idleness by our
already overburdened taxpayers.

With fodcrnl funds soon available, with the winter nearly'
over, the naming of suoh a representative committee should
mean that every worthy case of need in Jackson County will
be properly and adequately attended to.
No Cause
THE declaring of this bank holiday, was necessitated by
conditions OUTSIDE, not inside this state. The banks
here and throughout Oregon are just as strong now as before
this action was taken.
That this truth is generally
shown throughout the state yesterday, when a vast majority
of the banks opened for business, and there were no runs,
no excitement.
It is a time for all people, with their own interests at heart,
to keep their heads, and remain oalm. Those who don't, will
invite the very situation they wish to avoid.
For the fear complex is contagious and destructive. Une

Editorial Comment
What Is the best means of bringing
Immediate peace to Jackson county?
We cannot continue as In the last
two weeks with strife and discord
predominant In county affairs. The
Dally Tidings at this time suggeats
the TEMPORARY retirement from
public office of those officials, both
elective and appointed, who have been
charged with Implication In the si-

eve of an ordered recountthe de

of the seoredness of the ballot bos.
No man is guilty until he is proved
guilty. Our sugeetton that these
public officials retire doea not neces
sarily mean our belief In their guilt
of the charges made against them.
Wa are thinking of the welfare of
Jackson county, and this, we believe,
should be the primary consideration
of public officials.

LOSSES FROM CASUALTIES AND
THEFT
To be deductible, a loss arising
from "fires, storms, shipwrecks, or
other casualty," need not be con
nected with the taxpayers trade or
business. If his home or his auto
mobile Is destroyed by fire, or his
summer bungalow damaged by flood
or storm, he may claim a deduction
for the loss sustained.
Loss of property by theft or bur
glary is an allowable deduction, and
need not be Incurred In trade or
business. Hense, the loss occasioned
by the theft of Jewelry or an auto
mobile used for pleasure and con
venience is deductible. It must be
established however, that the prop
erty was actually stolen. Should cir
cumstances attending the loss leave
the owner In doubt as to whether It
was stolen or lost, the claim would
not be allowed.
A loss la deductible only In the
year In which it Is sustained, even
though, as In the case of a theft or
casualty, It may not be discovered
until a later year. Losses compen
sated for by Insurance or otherwise,
of course, are not deductible. How
ever, in the event the amount of
Insurance Is not sufficient to rec
ompense for the loss sustained, the
excess of the loss over the amount
of the Insurance Is deductible.
