And you can't deny that I warned you, Farrell, didn't IT I said Babe has never had a thought apart from Mark, I said. But I daresay you're one of the stubborn sort, you'd rather take a toss at a hedge than fo round by a gate" "One moment, Mrs. Lodely. Mark want to say something." ''It's hardly worth my saying. But do you happen to know, Arm itage, that on the rery day of my operation Barbara was begging me, to be thoroughly nngallant, badgering me Into marrying her in few days' timet" "I know that." Armltage was de termined to keep cool. "She thought that I wasn't keeping my part of our compact." green, deep pool, winking In the light of the Are. "Unfortunately, I'm not In a condition to hawk It for sale. Yon' don't happen to col lect emeralds, Armltagot" "I don't, but I'll buy this one." "Poor old Armltage!" crooned Mark. "Yon daren't prevent my being able to afford Barbara a ring." "Of eonrse I daren'tl Any more than yon dare prevent my send ing her flowers and books'' "The devil you do!" "You and I," continued Armltage cheerfully writing 'Mark Lodely, Esq.' on the blank check. "you and I are now, as a result of my machi nations, rivals of ciiual distinction for a lady a hand. I shall hang about her unashamedly for the agreed time. It she still won't have me, shall clear out of the country." 'And try and sleal a girl from some other poor devil of a crip ple!" Mark's sudden rage was upon him. "You know you've pretended to be so cursedly open and un ashamed and all that, hut you've played a low-down game and you know It God, If I ha strength, I'd give yon the damnedest hid lngl" 'Yon may have that strength yet. When you have, remember that II was I who bought It back for you." '" "Marriage with Barbara would be advantageous to Mark." "She thought you were deliber ately dragging me down to your level," contributed Mark and shook with genuine mirth. "But now our compact la re- nowea. rne any will come when ns win quite aeumteiy choose you or me." "Baba'll marry Mark! Anythln' lee is out of the quostlon. Of course Babs'll marry Mark I" Mrs. Lodely'i face had mottled pain fully. : "Sh may marry neither of ns," kuggested Mark, still Immensely amused, Armltage smiled with qual good humor. "That, at the moment, seems the most probable. She admlta she doesn't care for me. And she ends you this message: that she wants her engagement to you def initely and publicly broken." And ' Armltage laid upon the table, next to ths tumbled vase, the emerald In its platinum web. There was a dead silence. Mrs. Lodely, from whom Immedlnto clamor might have beon expoctod, aat and gaped. Ths red patches on her face grew deeper. Mark put out a finger and touched the Jewel Idly. At last "I'd absolutely forgotten I ever gave her the thing," he said Just above his breath, and Armltage had the Impression that he meant It. Bis Indifference loosened Mrs. Lodely'a tongue. "If you'll excuse me eayln' so, Farrell, you'd do better not to mix yourself up In this. Of course, feelin' as you do about Barbara, it'a natural you sbould hope she's dona with Mark, but believe me, they've had these tiffs before and they always make 'em up again. Don't you, MarkT And as for the merald. Dabs never liked it and I think It's very sensible of her to send it back. If I wera you, Mark, I'd eell It and buy her some thin' she'd like better. Why not give, her a nice ring? She'll feel more like other engaged girls then." There waa another long silence. "That's really rather a good Idea," commented Mark at last Again he poked at the stone, a Mark muttered furiously and was silent "Remember also that it was through your behavior and not mine that she broke off her engage ment to you." "Comic-opera plfflol She does that kind of thing. Makos mo sick, looking coy and pulling at a daisy, he lovos me be loves me not! But I've always told her I won't endure it and I won't endure it now!" His voice rose wildly. "Though I suppose that, while I'm on my back here, you'll feel free to cook up any lies against me that you think she'll swallow. Wbat Is she doing? Whore Is she? I haven't even an address to wrlto to. You're deliberately koeplng her away from mol" "Hardly! Las' week I brought her up from Kings Mallard, where she has wound up her affairs. She Is at Miss Raoul's bouse In St John's Wood, busy redecorating It. How much did you sny you wanted for the emerald?" "Four hundred and fifty," mut tered Mark sulkily; and as Arm ltage calmly Inscribed the amount In words and In figures Mrs. Lode ly, Wu3 had opened her mouth, ehut it again. But the tips of her eara glowed red. The choc'i changed hands and Armltage slipped the emerald back Into his pocket; and at once Mrs. Lodely be gan to talk at the top of her voice. possibly to drown the sound of the transaction, "It's absurd even to think of Barbara serloiiBly breukln' with Mark," ahe announcod. "Why, they'ro been devoted to each other since they wero children I Mark's father made Babs promise" You and I, Mrs. Lodely, are the Inst people In the world to prophesy Barbara's actions. I'm anxious to believe the engageniont broken because I want to marry her myself. You're anxious tc think It s 1 exist bseauso " Armltage paused, then added de liberately, "because you think map rlage with Barbara would be finan cially advantageous to your son."
