Lawrence Link Between Ocean and Great Lakes Will Bring Seagoing Ships to Far Inland Area NEW YORK (AP) The vaet mid dle west li reaching toward the sea. With the ratification of the treaty Just ilRDed between the United Btatea and Canada, probably at the Xiext session of congress, the final tags of connecting the Great Lakes jplth the Atlantlo by a St. Lawrence channel for ocean-going vessels will be entered upon. TJie channel, which will add an .intimated 38.000,000 tone of cargo to Great Lakea shipping the year it Is opened, also brings some 2,000, ooo horsepower to New York state find Ontario for division. The power development, secondary to the seaway so far as the nation la concerned, 1 of vital importance go New York. New York Claims Power, New York wants, and claims title to, the power, but whether she will pay some 1S0,000.000 as her share of the development expense remains lo be- eeen. Governor Roosevelt, Democratic presidential nominee, asked recently Jbr a conference with President Hoo ver on the power question, out ine president declined. The governor baa Insisted the power must belong publicly to the state, not to pnvaw developers. Contrary to popular belief, the Oreat Lakes-8t. Lawrence waterway is no longer a vsst project requiring billions of dollars for realisation, be- tween Lake Ontario and Montreal. A deep channel for ooean-golng ahlps ' will cost close to $300,000,000, It la estimated. The most difficult prob lem will be a alx-mlle canal with two locks on the American aide around Bernhart Island. The one other section to be opened i. the three-mile Lachlne canal. west nf Montreal. This project, to be undertaken by Canada, can be completed easily by tne time tne in ternational section Is finished. mm time to time othr: links have been forged in the chain of lakes, rivers ana cnni. wetland Canal Opened. The most Important waa opened this year with completion by the Canadian government of . the new Wetland canal at a coat of 100,- fton nni! . For yeara gigantic dredges have been at work at widely acattered polnta. i...t l.tnk In 48-Mlle Strip. Today the last Important link to be forged U the 48-mlle "Interna tional rapids" section of the river made In a little over 35 miles. Seven Jocks, each with a lift of feet, outrivaling even the gigantic Panama canal locks, were built, nna of the seven, at Humberstone, is the longest In the world 1380 .. The channel. 810 feet wide and' 80 feet deep, la capable of han dling SB per cent of the ocean car- frl.nl. Recently the Canadian parliament voted to take over tne oeaunru canal, connecting Lal-.ee Prancla and at isiiit. between Oitdeneburg. N. Y., and Montreal. This canal, 14 miles long, Is nearlng completion. . islea Section Nearly Done. A 87-foot channel through the Thousand islands aoctlon will be virtually completed this year, allow ing ahlpe from the lakes to proceed S50 miles farther east than ever be- tore. This la a 67-mlle atretcn. Meanwhile huge dredgea are at work in the harbors and channels of the Great Lakes. Last year conijreea Impropriated almost 30.000.000 to deepen these cnanneia irom i (eet. Altogether the various develop ments indicate that within four to eight yeara ocean freighters will be docking at Great Lakea porta.' Some of the largest cities In the country, Including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Toledo, will be reach ed by the waterway. Duluth ranks second only to New York as a port In point of tonnage. The net value of Great Lakea shipping reached a total of 13.408. 000.000 In 1028, the banner year, or S88.000.0O0 cargo tone In 1030. Huge Tonnage Foreseen. President Hoover, when secretary of commerce, caused a survey of 'canal possibilities to be IniJS in loa. The loweat estimate was that 9S.0O0.OC0 tone would be carried through the canal the yeat It la opened. It la estimated that wheat could be carried from Duluth to Liverpool from 8 to 10 cents cheaper on the bushel via the waterway. Middle western porta, teeming with Bommeree and seeking shorter and cheaper transportation, have pressed the waterway plan with more vigor M the result of the shipment of whest this season from Alberta and Saskatchewan by way of the new Hudson bay route.
