wald yesterday for smoking while
traveling on national forest lands at
Lake of the Woods and pleaded gull
ty to the offense.
Regulation T-l, paragraph H, pro-
vldes that the following acts are pro
hibited:
1. Building a camp fire without
flrat obtaining a permit from a forest
officer, except in a safe stove or at a
designated forest camp where camp
fire permlta are not required, as
shown by posted notices.
a. Smoking while traveling In
timber, brush, or grass areas, except
on paved or surfaced highways.
8. Going or being upon any na
tional forest lands aa described above
except at designated and posted tor
est camps, with automobiles, other
vehicles, or pack horses, with the In
tention of camping thereon, without
being equipped, for each vehicle or
pack train, with the following flre-

BAN FRANCISCO, July ST. (API-
Police Investigating the deaths of
three men who died after drinking
liquor containing a quick, deadly
poison, suggested today the men may
have been victims of a murder plot
aprlnglng from the brain of a manlao.
The victims. Louie Jacohson, man
ager of a theater office building, and
Richard R. Smith and Joseph C.
Lorena, both trarflo policemen, died
ahortly after meeting tn Jacobson'a
office yesterday afternoon.
Analysis of the contents of a half-
empty bottle In Jacooson'a office re
vealed It atlll contained enough of
the poison to kill more than 100 men.
The three died In Jacobson'a office
after a friendly gathering to which
the patrolmen had taken a bottle of
lemon punch. The punch waa mixed
with the contents of a bottle taken
from Jacobson'a filing cabinet, police
believe. That bottle contained a mix
ture of alcohol and water, plus a
large quantity of the poison.
Deteetirea of the homicide aoued
began an Investigation to establish
a motive for the apparent murder.
Friends of the victims were question
ed In search for a possible fourth
indiviruai who might have poisoned
the alcohol.

CLERK SLUGGED;
ATTACKER FLEES
Carl Sloop, night clerk at the
Hotel Medford, was slugged this
morning about four o'clock as he tut
reading a magazine In lobby chair,
by an Intruder who fled after deal
ing Sloop a terrific, blow on the
forehead. Leonard Davis, a bellhop,
asleep In another lobby chair, was
awakened by ths hubbub. Bobbery
Is given as the motive of the attack
and the city police and sheriff's of
fice are Investigating the circum
stances. No money was taken. The
possibility that Sloop may have been
the victim of a revenge aesault waa
also being Investigated. The night
cleric knows no one who bears him

According to Sloop's report to the
police, he waa seated In a chair read
lng, with his back to the main
dining room door. He became aware
of the presence of some one and
the next second felt the severe blow
on his head. He Jumped to his feet
In time to see a figure racing past
the telephone booths, escaping thru
the aide door.
An attendant at the Schuler Ga
rage reported that about the time
of the assault he saw tw6 men speed
down Ivy street In a Chevrolet coupe.
It developed after the assault that
all the doors of the hotel had been
unlocked to make escape easy. The
authorities hold that the assailant
was acquainted with the ground floor
of the hotel and believe that he may
have sneaked up through the base
ment. Sloop sustained a large welt on
his forehead.

Chairman McNary of the senate agri
culture committee, after a conference
at the White House today, said he
had Informed Prosldent Hoover the
Investigation of the farm board
would begin til'.her today or tomor
row.
After a conference with Comptrol
ler General McCarl yesterday, Mc
Nary said, arrangementa were made
for two experts to begin at once a
detailed examination of all of the
board's transactions and activities.
"Our two Investigators," McNary
said, "will examine in the most min
ute detail all of the board'a loans to
cooperatives, Its dealings with Its
affiliates, and tn fact, all of the
board's loans, the amounts paid and
me amounts repaid."
McNary said he had wired the sub
committee In charge of the board In
vestigation the steps he had already
taxen in launching the Investigation

sired to meet with him before next
November to concentrate the Inquiry,
either here or in Chicago, h would

Spanish-American war veterans to
day concluded their 24th annual en
campment. The high spot of Tuesday's session
waa the resolution favoring Immedi
ate payment of adjusted compensa
tion certificates of World war vet
erans. This resolution was finally
approved after three hours of hoc and
bitter argument.

Grand Marshsl Bohn of Klamath
Palls, concluded yesterday's 'hems

Forty veterans were initiated Into
the fun order of Snalx, following the
march through the city streets with
the huge paper and allk snake which
