Mr. and Mrs. Gene Childer's New Roxy Theatre Opens Tonight BEAUTY, COMFORT ARE COMBINED IN LAIESITHEAIER New House Will Seat 450 Attractive Lighting and Decoration Add Touch Program Changes Often a tippled In gold, silver and black, with two double silver-colored doors accented by black futuristic designs, and the box office also decorated in silver and black, the entrance to the new Roxy theater on East Main street next to Bear creek bridge will pre sent an imposing view for the Initial opening this evening at seven o'clock, with the showing of "Shanghai Ex press," starring Marlene Dietrich. Work on the theater has been In progress for the past few weeks, under the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Oene Chllders. owners and operators of the new show house. They formerly op erated the Isle theater, across the street for three years, The new building, with 460 com fortable over-stuffed chairs, has car pets to blend In with the color scheme. Attractive light shades of parchment were designed In buff and blue, by Leslie Van Doren, of the Frank 0. Clark architect office, A ' drinking fountain standi in a little alcove of buff and blue, the same color as the decorations in the foyer. Heavy velvet portieres and hangings of tapestry add much to the lobby of Med ford's newest movie theater. To the left of the main entrance Is located the cfflce of Mr. and Mrs. Chllders, end upstairs Is the gene rator and outlet fan In the room ad Joining the projection space. The morning plane from Los An geles today brought In Important parte of the RCA photophone sound equipment, which was installed by a crew of workers. The sound screen installed at the Roxy Is one of the newest and beat being used at the present time, according to sound au thorities. Atop the building Is a 25-foot Neon sign in red and blue, which directs Medford's movie fans to "Roxy Thea ter." The marquee Is alao Illumina ted with Neon tubing, where the title of the feature attraction Is shown. Moderate low prices prevail a! the theater, Mrs. Chllders said today, and four ehanges of features will be made each week. Shows "Shanghai Express'9 Tonight "Shanghai Express," Marlene Diet rich's first starring picture since she returned from Europe, Is scheduled as the feature at the opening of the new Roxy theatre tonight. This thrilling story of adventure and romance was originally written by Vie well known novelist and traveler, Harry Harvey, and dramatized for the screen by Jules Purthman, wo also wrote the screen play of "Morocco," Miss Dietrich's first starring picture made In America. Josef von Sternberg, maker of "Mo rocco" and "Dishonored," also direct ed "Shanghai Express." The support ing cast is headed by Cltve Brook, who recently played the leading role in "34 Hours," and Anna May Wong, Oriental heroine of the picture, "Daughter of the Dragon." Miss Dietrich plays the part of a notorious and glamorous woman of the world. w.hlle Brook portrays a British officer who meets her, after pears of separation, aboard the Shanghai express, which is held up by a ChlneM bandit general, played by Warner Oland. "Shanghai Express" Is a stirringly melodramatic picture with a large cast of celebrities. Sherwin-Williams paints from Hub- hard Brothers, Incorporated were used In decorating the interior of the theater, and painting and tinting was done by A. B. Caldwell. Electrical wir ing and installation of artistic fix tures was in charge of R. A. Helvey, with the Palmer Electric store fur nishing the equipment. One Fatality In Oregon Industry SALEM, Ore., June 24. (API- Bert Edson, mill laborer at Dallas, was listed as the only fatality In Oregon Industry the past week. Preparations are being made at Diamond Lake to entertain Vie usual crowd of pleasure seekers over the Fourth of July. And this year the management Is planning special attractions to supplement the fish ing, rowing, and horseback riding of fered throughtout the season. A five-piece orchestra has been en gaged to furnish music for dancing the evenings of July 3, S and . And In addition these will be a welner and marsh mallow roast on the beach. Also the 24 -passenger launch, "Bai ley," will make moonlight exurslons around the lake during the evening, as well as regular dally trips. Fishing remains exceptionally good, with frequent catches measuring 30 Inches and over. There are plenty of boats available and reservations may be made either by mall or phone. Cottages also may be reserved at nominal rates. Meals In the dining room have been reduced In price. However, no reduction has been made In quantity or quality. Special dinners will be served noon and evening of the 3nd, 3rd and 4th. Also the lunch coun ter will serve short orders to those who desire. 1 Soviet Air Lines Forge New Links In Russian Chain MOSCOW (AP) A new Interna tional air line between Leningrad and Berlin Is to be opened this sum mer to supplement the present mall and passenger service with the Ger man capital. The government plans also to start a dozen new plane routes uniting Urge Industrial and agricultural cen ters in this country. These will ex tend the total of air lines from S3, 783 miles at the end of 1931 to 33, 000 miles by the end of 1032. William Thompson, a middle-aged man, grey haired and toll worn, charged with passing a bogue check for SIO In Jacksonville early this month, was given a suspended sen tence by Circuit Judge H. D, Nor ton this morning. Thompson wept. It was his first appearance In any court on any charge. Conditions of suspension of sen tence for a six months' period were that Thompson pay back the 10 received for the check, when able and report regularly to the district attorney. Investigation of Thompson's past showed that he had worked hard all his life, chiefly in the sawmills of Oregon and northern California, At the time of the forgery he was working In a mine near Sterling.
