WE PREDICT that the better the people of Medford know Mayor Wilson the better they will like him. There is nothing spectacular or showy about him nothing probably not enough of the politician about him. But he is absolutely dependable, capable, deeply devoted to what he regards as best for the welfare of the people of this city, and with the courage to take a firm stand on anything he be lieves to be right. So we congratulate the new Mayor and extend the same pledge of assistance and support that we have extended to other Mayors in the past (and would have extended Mr. Wilson's op ponent had he been successful.) "We will be with you when we believe you arc right; and against you when we believe you wrong, und the sole test of right and wrong will be what we regard as bunt for the city of Medford." THE KLAMATH MURDER CASE rOICAIji) NACKEH, who murdered Fred Dunbar at Summit Lake last l.abor Day, tells the jury in his defense that he "isn't very smart." . Well, he was smart enough to shoot a defenseless man down in cold blood, bind up and terrify his girl companion; and he is now smart enough to ask for au acquittal ou the ground lie is insane. Smart enough, we should say, to justify putting Nacker where lie will be unable to repeat such a performance. BUT that, unfortunately, isn't the wny the plea of insanity usually works. If the Klamath jury in tliis case decides the defendant is crazy, he will be acquitted, sent to an insane asy lum and in a few years be judged snnc, released and allowed to roam at large again. At least that was the experience of Harry Thaw, and only lack of funds has prevented, it from being the experience of countless other homicidal maniacs. v , V ' SUCH a situation merely cals attention once morerto'thc ab surdity and the perversion of this insanity plea, as practiced in American courts.: .' No one .denies this liulftekcr is a! murderer and a particu larly dangerous and heartless one. The purpose of all law is to protect society front such men. Insanity is no more a valid de fense than the color of the defendant's hair or his religion. In fact, an insane murderer is more dangerous to society than a sane one; for the littler at least will not shoot and kill without sonio . reason ; tho former may start on a shooting bee at any time.
