Cunningham L NTERIOR OF HOMES: VIE FOR PRIZES THIS ON YULE LIGHTS Almost everyone old enough to Only a say the alphabet remembers wheni the click the Christmas tree was not so much a symbolical decoration as a haz ardous adventure. It took bravery to fasten candles to a highly com bustible tree, to increase the risk by festooning that tree with in flammable decorations, and then to light those candles. When you realize that nana took n chance on watching his ancestral manslojhow (which was probably scantily cov ered by insurance) burn down every time ho permitted that candle-lighting ritual to tako plaice you realize that papa was a, pretty sporting gentleman. Hut today we wouldn't consider him sporting just plain foolish, because now it in possible to be both safe and ar tistic. After all, there isn't much sense in risking destruction when it is possible to secure a much bet ter effect and to maintain the tra dition in complete security. To get right to the heart of the matter, we feel with the rest of the world through all the ogee that light is necessary to Christmas dec oration, and we furthermore feel that strings of tiny colored electric lights offer just about the most perfect way of decorating with light which has been dreamed of or imagined. You are able to have any color light you want, to put it anywhere you want It. and to have as much of it as you want! ! That's what electrical Christmas decorations, have done for you. A few years ago electrical Christ I mas decorations were practically unknown, but a soon as they wero ! introduced their practicability and ! beauty brought them almost over- I night success. Now there is hardly a home in the country where elec trical Christmas tree lights are not enjoyed. Tlio Tree. Naturally, the Christmas tree !s the focal point of all the Interior Christmas decorations. Plan your tree carefully. Don't just hang a lot of colored lights and ornaments on it and expect to get a tree thai is nn artistic triumph. We are getting more and more intrigued by the trees which show just one or two colors of light some of the loveliest trees we saw last year were developed entirely In blue or blue and white lights, with no trimmings other than tin sel and artificial snow.; , Incident ally, these trees are as lovely out doors as they are indoors. There are splendid tree bases, wired for electric lamps around the base and having two or more out lets into which, to plug your string of Christmas tree lights and dec orations. These bases are conical shaped and are filled with 25 pounds of water. The tree is in serted In the apex of the cone, and then clamped securely into posi tion. The water holds the tree up right and also keeps it freshand green. The Fireplace. One way to decorate the fire place is to festoon it with conven tional garlands of leaves, end then to Intertwine the garlands with strings of tiny lights. We do not i recommend the twinkling lights ! for this purpse, as they get very i irritating if left on for any length of time. In fact, we are not given to recommending, tho twinkling HghUs for Indoor use at all. They are elegant for outdoor decora tions as they look animated and exciting, but Inside they get on your nerves. For the windows there are many electrical ornaments. Ued wreaths with candles at the base of them will flaunt pointed electric lamps for flames. Simulated holly wreaths have tiny lights entwined through them. These holly wreaths come in a larger size especially suitable for the door to your home. For the windows where there are not to be wreaths the single elec tric rand lea or the cnndollers are delightful. The candollers consint of a row of electrical candles in graduated sizes, and may be ob tained Jn either red or cream. 4 I IjRITHHI'jIjH, Dee, 13.
