try and courage nothing to arouse enthusiasm during n rough

ation, when applied to the very .practical, business of adminm
tering the affairs of a city like Medford.

WE PREDICT that the better the people of Medford know
Mayor Wilson the better they will like him. There is
nothing spectacular or showy about him nothing probably not
enough of the politician about him.
But he is absolutely dependable, capable, deeply devoted to
what he regards as best for the welfare of the people of this city,
and with the courage to take a firm stand on anything he be
lieves to be right.
So we congratulate the new Mayor and extend the same
pledge of assistance and support that we have extended to other
Mayors in the past (and would have extended Mr. Wilson's op
ponent had he been successful.)
"We will be with you when we believe you arc right; and
against you when we believe you wrong, und the sole test of
right and wrong will be what we regard as bunt for the city of
Medford."
THE KLAMATH MURDER CASE
rOICAIji) NACKEH, who murdered Fred Dunbar at Summit
Lake last l.abor Day, tells the jury in his defense that he
"isn't very smart."
. Well, he was smart enough to shoot a defenseless man down
in cold blood, bind up and terrify his girl companion; and he is
now smart enough to ask for au acquittal ou the ground lie is
insane.
Smart enough, we should say, to justify putting Nacker
where lie will be unable to repeat such a performance.
BUT that, unfortunately, isn't the wny the plea of insanity
usually works. If the Klamath jury in tliis case decides the
defendant is crazy, he will be acquitted, sent to an insane asy
lum and in a few years be judged snnc, released and allowed to
roam at large again.
At least that was the experience of Harry Thaw, and only
lack of funds has prevented, it from being the experience of
countless other homicidal maniacs.

SUCH a situation merely cals attention once morerto'thc ab
surdity and the perversion of this insanity plea, as practiced
in American courts.: .' ',.'.
And all that is needed to eorrect this abuse, as with most of
the other legal abuses from vliielLMtliis country suffers, is the

larly dangerous and heartless one. The purpose of all law is to
protect society front such men. Insanity is no more a valid de
fense than the color of the defendant's hair or his religion. In
fact, an insane murderer is more dangerous to society than a
sane one; for the littler at least will not shoot and kill without
sonio . reason ; tho former may start on a shooting bee at any
time.

IF THE jury decides Nncker is insane, then that fact should
end trie, mailer. . He should be locked up in an ASYLUM
FOR LIFE. If at any subsequent time ho should should ask far
his freedom on the ground he lias recovered his iusanity, and
secure it, then he should receive the punishment lie escaped, be
canso of his insanity plea.
, That'is tho .common sense way of treating such criminals and,
as wo see it, tho only way to prevent tho insanity plea, making
a farce and scandal of ;crimiual justice iu this couutry.
THE LAST STAND OF KINGS
IF THE present revolution in Spain doesn't end Iho monarchy,
another one will. A kiiigless Europe in another decade is as
certain as anything still in the future can be. . ,
The lialkan thrones are plainly-tottering, the royal family in
Greece have their yacht with steam up ready to depart at any
time, fty 1940 there won't be a crowned head, set firmly on
human shoulders, except perhaps in parts of darkest Africa,
Italy and Great l.ritain.
Tho royal houses in England and Italy promise to endure,
because iu England tho King long ago abandoned resisting Dem
ocracy and decided to eo-operato with it ; and in Italy, the King
bowed to the will of the people instead of fighting it.
But in Spain and the Halkans the ideas of absolute monarchy
have not been so readily abandoned. As a result the royal ob
structionists will he brushed aside, perhaps without bloodshed,
hut more likely with it.

ature golf on Saturday. All the

birthday parties. All the other
children never think about going
to bed before 10 o'clock at night.
All the other children go without
hats and frequently without sweat
ers, even when the days are cold,
and they do'not have to get home
by dnrk.
The parents of all the other chil
dren are always at their children's
disposal. They simply love to play
games in the evening, and they are;
forever driving out in the motor
car to some place where ice cream
connjf may be had. All the other
children spend as much as they
like on lunch. They also carry
their books to school in leather
brief cases with their initials in
gold.
However, It appears that all the
