During the filming of "The Splen did Uoad," Kdward 1 Karle, Lionel Barrymore, Robert Frnzier and Anna Q. Ntlsson got together and talked over old times. All four were con nected with the early film days. Kd ward Karle, since he was a stage ac tor, was engaged to play a lead in the first talking movio. He worked from noon to midnight for a week. Hie Teachers' Annual County Institute commenced n three tiny session this mnrnliiK "l the high school building; with J. S. Land ers, president of the Oregon State Normal School, the principal speaker. The session opened with an address of welcome by Superintendent Hedrick loilowed by an address by President Landers who spoke on "Educational Responsibility in un Industrial A.'e." "The public school," he said, "has become a burden hearer of civilization. Its burden Is to adjust each life into its peculiar environment. There Is no conflict between science and re ligion. Truth never conflicts truth." History text books have glorified war and steps should be taken, he told his listeners, to avoid such glorifica tion. He dwelt a short time on law observance, whether it be by inclina tion or conscience and continued on the condition of modern youth. The automobiles, trolleys and theatres have afforded an envlronment'far dif ferent than the youth of 10 years ago experienced. Modern youth, ho con tended, has not degenerated in any way. but It is for the school teacher to meet the present conditions. Speaking to rural teachers on "Tho Significance of the Rural School." President Landers stated that the. term, as an average, is far too short 1'or such schools Hnd likewise the fi nances are too limited. He advocated the elimination of the one-room school ; house. An exercise, which was to have been given tomorrow afternoon by the fifth! grade of the Lincoln School, taught by Miss Newberry, was presented this morning and was well received. The institute is progressing accord ing to schedule today. No delay has been experienced, each number on the program commencing on time.
