Annual County Institute commenced n
three tiny session this mnrnliiK "l the
high school building; with J. S. Land
ers, president of the Oregon State
Normal School, the principal speaker.
The session opened with an address
of welcome by Superintendent Hedrick
loilowed by an address by President
Landers who spoke on "Educational
Responsibility in un Industrial A.'e."
"The public school," he said, "has
become a burden hearer of civilization.
Its burden Is to adjust each life into
its peculiar environment. There Is
no conflict between science and re
ligion. Truth never conflicts truth."
History text books have glorified
war and steps should be taken, he told
his listeners, to avoid such glorifica
tion. He dwelt a short time on law
observance, whether it be by inclina
tion or conscience and continued on
the condition of modern youth. The
automobiles, trolleys and theatres
have afforded an envlronment'far dif
ferent than the youth of 10 years ago
experienced. Modern youth, ho con
tended, has not degenerated in any
way. but It is for the school teacher
to meet the present conditions.
Speaking to rural teachers on "Tho
Significance of the Rural School."
President Landers stated that the.
term, as an average, is far too short
1'or such schools Hnd likewise the fi
nances are too limited. He advocated
the elimination of the one-room school ;
house.
An exercise, which was to have been
given tomorrow afternoon by the fifth!
grade of the Lincoln School, taught
by Miss Newberry, was presented this
morning and was well received.
The institute is progressing accord
ing to schedule today. No delay has
been experienced, each number on the
program commencing on time.
