MAY 11, 1025 Better Sfte Commitee Still in Hidiog ledferd's Proposed New High School as Drawn by Architects o ti re fur "open eovt'iiiints openly arrive at." The preserva tion of a self-crnveniinsj republic like ours is in the public discussion of public (iicstions. Vc are entitled, the people o Medford are entitled, to know the interests and influences back of the movement to foist onto us for a bicli school site the pravel bars, pussy willow thickets, railroad embankments, old creek channels and bayous of the I". & K. terminal. In Saturday's Mail Tribune we called on the "Better Site Committee"' to break cover and reveal their identity. To date they have not done so. They have jockeyed themselves into a distasteful and embairassiii!; position; either horn of the dilemma is bad; either hovu they crab is (joint; to be extremely painful. In the meantime, everybody is trying to tiuess who they are. o 0 o iff ' - : - Jf SUNDAY GRIST OF Ye Letter Box ; Most of the usual grist of over Sun day automobile violation .cases were brought up hi Judge Taylor's court this forenoon, but probably the most interesting case Is the 'arrest of a .Medford man Sunday on the accusa tion of intoxication and driving a car while intoxicated, concerning which no Information was given out by the arresting officers. It is understood that District At torney Chancy will have this case brought direct before the grand jury. J William H. Lodge, manager of the Klamath Falls Lumber company, en tered a plea of not guilty in court here this morning to the charge of reckless driving preferred by J. J. McMahon. Btate traffic officer. The case was then continued for trial and Lodge's car is being held by the authorities. It ts charged that Lodge drove his Dodge car yesterday noon on the Ptv cific highway near Phoenix into the rear of the wagon of J. Supt. Smith for Holly Street To the Kdltor: In their report Professor Douglas and Dr. Kalney say: "Your committee (meaning themselves! choose the North Holly street (property for the site for the location of your new high school, since wo consider it has more and better points in its favor." I believe their recommendation should bo followed. More weight should he given some points than others in making a selec tion. One of these is elevation. I would not favor a hilly site, but know it should not he low. The committee on school house planning and construction of the Na tional (Education association, Frank Irving Cooper, Boston's famous school architect, chairman, in their report just published tn discussing essential qualities of the site, say: "Avoid low, filled and wet land." The -iorth Holly site is also more retired with fewer distractions to draw the attention of students while in school or going to or from the sessions. Either site is adequate in size. In cluding only that land now owned by the school district and what can he obtained from the city, at least 10 acres can be horses, and on the seat of which were. clearing up irmuera Bm o -u u Mr. and Mrs. Hertford and their lPb"te them to a considerable de gree, it aoes not seem to oe vikvh even in Mr. Silliman's mind what It is all about. 1 In the first place, how does it hap pen that Mr. Hoggs has an option on the property concerned? It surely I isn't possible that Mr. Boggs has 'some property that he wishes to ex- young son. The collision resulted in hurling Mr. Heriford and the boy off the wagon and in throwing Mrs. Heriford over the Beat into the body of the wagon. No injury was suffered beyond bruises as far as can be learned. fined $10 for failure to dim his lights. fh""Ku with. ,?""m"" ? iB,H t . 7, , in turn sell to the school district Another Klamath Falls man, P. It is charged that he was racing with a Ford car and had outdistanced it when Traffic Officer McMahon, who had noticed the race, in his own car quietly slipped along side of the car of Hergman, who thought it was still the Ford, and placed him under" arrest. liergman in court pleaded guilty to going from 40 to 45 miles an hour and was fined $15. this isn't the case, isn't Mr. Silllm.ni likely to Bet himself legally involv ed in case he tries to grant an option to Mr., Boggs nnd the school district nt the same time? Agahi, If noither of these assumptions are true, we are sure that Mr. Boggs wouldn't take It upon himself to take an option on the property for the district, as he thoroughly under stands ' that the school board was elected to transact such businessand such a course would he unethical Commencement Season - is approaching and gifts to the young graudate will soon be in order. The suggestion that the old building must he used in conjunction with the new, and therefore must be near it. is the most arrant nonsense. This Kxecutivc Committee was selected at a conference of rep resentative Medford citizens to conduct the campaign for the North Holly Ili'h School site. This commit! e has no financial or business interests to consider in this ficht. It has at heart only what it believes to be the best interests of the City of Medford. We are all volunteers. We have no paid workers. We have no coerced or bribed school teachers to spread poisoned and partisan propaganda anionj; the children of our public schools, at public expense. In our organization we have no hotel architects inspired by the prospect of fat fees to broadcast pamphlets for us; we have no plumbers with promise of juicy con tracts, nor real cstaters blinded by their desire to unload unsalable property. We do not have to stoop to distortion of fact or falsehood bid" wo arc iroinn, to demand a showdown fight, without any quar ter asked or given. In the preliminary skirmish we arc going to undertake to un mask the individuals who arc hiding behind this "HKTTKIt SITE OOMM1TTKK." Conic out into the open, gentlemen, so every voter in the city of Medford can take a squint at you. We know who you arc but lots of our people do not. Let the voters have a chance to look you over, size you up and analyze your motives. Do it as grace fully as you can, but' do if. Quit shoving your women and children into the front lines. To break cover may hurt your Hear creek pride, but it will recover ynri from the contemptible and suspicious position in which you now find yourselves.
