States Senator James A. Reed, candi
date for the democratic presidential
nomination, In a speech here last

Missouri democratic opponents and re
plied to an anonymous circular dis
tributed at the meeting.
"These cowards who dare not sign
their names," Heed replied, "ask me
'it Missouri gives you the delegation
to the national convention and you
cannot get the nomination, to whom

"If Missouri's delegation go to the

is decreasing In Britain, but the coun
try's population problem with 'which
unemployment is linked, is getting
worse because people seem to live
longer than they used to.
Last year the birth rate was 19.7
per thousand, the lowest on record,
except during the last stages of the
war. but the death rate simultan
eously desrensed to 11.6, the healthiest
twelve months on record. The infaul
mortality rate was the most favorable
yet achieved, Ca per thousand, com
pared with 77 in 1922. There were
708,380 births In England and Wales
and 444,86a deaths, a natural Increase,
in population of 312,517.
The marriage rate in Kngland and
Wales during 1923 was 1 B.2 per
thousand.
