Castle Gate Experts Fear En- tire Force Utah Fuel Mine Is Rilled by Explosion or Fire Rescue Teams Rushed From Salt Lake : Explosion Is a Terrific One. CASTLE GATE, Utah, March 8. (By the Associated Press.) Lit tle hope for the safety of 175 men entombed today In coal mine No. 2 of the Utah Fuel company here by an explosion was held out by mine officials this evening. Rescue parties entering the man-way at the rear of the mine have been able to penetrate but a quarter of a mile and have found no trace of the men. The man-way was badly dam aged and littered with debris. CASTLR GATE, Utah, March 8. (fly tlio Assndated Press.) The force of, the first explosion was so groit that the entrance to the prop erty which is a slope mine, was block ed by debris. Tho majority of the men entombed In the mine are suld by company officials to be foreigners. According to word received at the offices of the Utah Coal comnany here, one rescue crew has entered the mine. Tho mine Is located about one mile and a half from the comnanv's offices here and messengers are being em plyoed to carry Information to the company headquarters. The : mine was operating with a normal force' of 175 men on tho day shift, according to Mr. Carnley. the shift having entered tho mine at 7:30 o'clock this morning. Castle Gate is llfl miles southeast of Salt Lake City. Word or the disas ter has been sent to Salt Lake and a call issued for all available doctors and nurses. A special train bearing the doctors and nurses has left that place for Castlo Gate, according to word received at the company's of fices here. The train Is not expected to arrive until after noon. A call also has been Issued for a mine rescue car from the bureau of mines, according to tha company of ficials. The mine Is said to be the largest Individual coal mine in the state of Utah. P. T. Paralysis which developed in his left side, it is said, lias steadily subsided. 1 PLEADS GUILTY LIQUORCHARGE Republican State Chairman Ad mits He Had Liquor in His Possession Girl Case Is Pending Will Not Be Can didate Again. McMINNVILLE. Ore., March 8. Shortly after being indicted by the grand jury here on a charge of ios session of liquor, Walter L. Tooze, Jr., republican state chairman for Oregon, and J. W. Templln, a garage owner here, pleaded guilty yesterday beforo Judge Robert Tucker. Sentence will be passed Monday afternoon. The indictment follows closely a pre vious Indictment on a chargo of con tributing to the delinquency of a mi nor. When the two were arraigned for trial, however, the indictment was thrown out as faulty. The case grows out of an incident in which Tooze and Templln wero charged with giving liquor to a minor girl. Tooze's term as republican state chairman expires next month and he has announced that he will not be a candidate for reelection. BRUNSWICK. Maine. March 8. Kenneth R. Mclean, liowdoin college sophomore, and his wife, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter today in con nection with the death of their one year old daughter, believed to havo been smothered at a hotel hero ten days ago after' the arrival of the mother from Tacoma. Wash. Hearing was waived, probable cause was found and they were ordered to furnish bail for their appearance at the May term of the superior court. They were taken back to Portland, Maine, where arrangements were to be made for bail, $U0.000 for MacLean and $10,0000 for his wife. McLean will not return to college. BUENOS A IRKS, Mar. R. Whip Asked How Paper Would Stand on Oil Probe More Telegrams Are Explained. WASHINGTON, March 8. Senator Curtis of Kansas, assistant republican leader In the senate, came voluntarily today before the oil committee to re fute the testimony of Ira E. Bennett, that he was the person referred to 'in the "principal" telegram. TIiIb telegram, sent by Bennett on January 29, to his employer, Edward H. Mclean, publisher of tho Washing ton Post, and a central figure In the oil disclosures, said that Bennett had seen the "principal," and aded there would bo "no rocking of the boat and no resignations," but that a reaction was expected from unwarranted po litical attacks. The Kansas senator, tho first mem ber of tho senate to take tho witness stand was sworn and immediately be gan an oral statement to the commit tee similar to that he submitted yes terday in the senate in denial of sev eral features of Bennett's testimony. So far ns he could recall, Senator Curtis did not see Bonnott until the day Sonator Norrls, republican, Ne braska, made a speech mentioning a member of McLean's ramily. That was on January 30, the day after the "principal" telegram was sent. Wanted Daugherty to Resign Later Bennett ,testifiod that Senator Curtis had advised President Coolidge Immediately after he came into ofrice to ask Attorney General Daugherty to resign. Francis T. Homer of Baltimore, took the stand and denied the statement in one of tho McLean telegrams that he had suggested a direct wire between Washington and the McLean cottage at Palm Beach to give "quick and easy acceBS to the White House." On the day of the Norris address, Bennett came to Curtis with refer ence to having Senator Norris with draw his remarks. Before that Senator Curtis testified ho already had suggested to Senator Norris that the remarks be expunged from the record. Later he saw Ben nett in the lobby and told him the statements would be withdrawn. Senator CurtlB flatly denied that Bennett had delivered any message to him from McLean. He added that he had not talked with Bennett about ioliticaI aspects of the oil Inquiry. Curtis Claim Denied Bonnett then was recalled and asked if he cared to make any further state ment. "Certainly." was his answer. "Senator Curtis." he went on, ap parently has forgotten one and prob ably two additional conversations I had with him." Bennett said he did not want to re late the conversations as they were somewhat personal. Pressed as to the conversations he ssld he would not answer unless com pelled to. as he did not want to Bpreaa "scandal. The loco motive, baggage car and a passenger car hurtled over the embankment. The Injurod trainmen, James Tar- ney, engineer; and Charles Taylor, foreman, wore removed to the hospital In Phoenix early today. Tarney died Inter. No passengers were hurt in the wreck.
