by the county court Wednesday after
noon on the petitions asking for the
paving of the road from Med ford to
Rucb, and after two hours of spirited
oratory, the county court took the mat
ter under advisement, ' until further
notice. There were about 200 people
present, mostly from the Applcgate
and Jacksonville districts, with one or
two from other districts.
' - Varied opinions cropped out, during
the discussion. Some favored the pro
ject as It stood, others demunded the
Immediate starting of work, others
wanted delny, others wanted this, and
others wanted that, and one citizen
mildly but flatly opposed the idea.
Now and Jhen some acrimony flashed
forth In the talks.

the court for delay, the proimsal being
no balm to the majority of those pres
ent.
Attorney Gus Newbury urged that if
work be started, it be started from
Kuch, so if the money ran out, the
Jucksonvillc-.Medford road would be
the sufferer and not the Applcgate.
He declared that the money voted
should have been, spent before this,
and that (here was no "(treat pressing
need" for the Jledford-Jauksonvllle
unit. , He also favored "a general
counting of noses," "a'chanie to bear
the Voice of ail the ieople on the sub
ject."
Willam A. Gates of this city, spoke
In favor of the plan, declared it "was
the biggest development project in the i
history of the valley," ami would
mean an Influx of new settlers, if the
land was cut up Into small tracts. Mr.
Gates saw commercial benefits accru
ing from the plan; and a bigger Med
forcl. . .
V. H. Gore, replied to some jabs by
Attorney Gus Newbury, and recited
how the Applcgate residents had been
loyal to the Pacific highway when it
was first broached, and favored the
plan. He also commended the county
court, and approved of carrying out
the work, without unnecessary delay.

has been laying idle long enough. It
ought to be spent before we are all
dead of old age."
" K. A. Fleming of Jacksonville, call
ed on to speak made a short speech In
which he favored the plan. John
Remiult of the same city, proclaimed
the health producing qualities of the
county seat, scented a plot to remove
the courthouse, and urged that "work
be started In the morning." Mr. Ren
ault also advised Gus "Newbury, who
said ho was not aware of the meeting
until just before It was called "to read
his home town paper, once In awhile."
Judge C. B. Watson spoke in favor
of the plan, declared all reports to the
contrary notwithstanding, "Oregon has
a better climate than California," and
as a side thought "hoped to see the
day when Sams Valley would be Irri
gated 'so', it could produce ' some
thing besides jackrabblts'and cab
bages." The road Judge Watson said
would mean the rapid development of
the Applegate, so that section would
advance to lts-"place in the scheme of
things." "Don't procrastinate," urged
the speaker. "Procrastination has
kept southern California ahead and
Oregon down,"
Attorney Charles Reames spore in
favor of the plan, as nn Invigora'.or
of Rogue River valley progress.
W. H. Barnum of Phoenix, said that
inasmuch as it was the national policy
as propounded by President Coolidge
to cut expenses to the bone, it was un
wise in his opinion, to expend money
on road building at this time. Mr.
Barnum had been pointed out by Mr.
Gore, as a benefactor from the paved
highway who opposed more road de
velopment. County Judge Gardner, speaking for
the county court, when all bad had
their say, said they had listened with
interest to the arguments presented.

matter, would be taken under advisement.
Emil Britt, mayor of Jacksonville,
acted as chairman, and made a speech
in which he urged early action ,and
no delay. .';'
The petitions for the pavement, con
taining between 1500 and 1600 names,
were presented to the county court.
Speakers said that 400 of these names
had been procured in this city.

Last year the Pacific States Electric
Co. decided to. greatly enlarge Its
advertising appropriation and spend
more money in the newspapers, con
tracting for space throughout the year
in 27 cities on the coast. .
- Five- Oregon newspapers, two in
Portland, one each in Eugene, Salem
and Medford were included in their
advertising schedule, one of which
was this paper. '
So successful was this campaign
that the company has decided to en
large its advertising appropriation
this year and to continue the Mail Tri
bune in their list, finding, by actual
experience, that it is one of the best
advertising mediums on the coast and
the one to reach the mr.nt people in
southern Oregon and northern Cali
fornia. The tirpt of the series of ads -for
1924 appears today, a full page,
entitled "Puget Sound to Yuma," giv
ing a map showing the inter-conneet-
ed power systems , of Washington,
Oregon. California. Idaho, Nevada
and Arizona, and-their. advantage In
furnishing a protective level against
critical power shortages. .
The ad also calls attention to a very
necessary essential, that of employing
electrical workers who guarantee
materials and fixtures, good workman
ship and fair prices, all of which a
"ChecK" Sal contractor must be and
do.
