A atnto ment issued today by the committee on marketing and production of the National Grange, in session here, do clared that "the farmers'' troubles are economic and not political." VThe biggest "problem before Amer ica today," the statement said, "1b the restoring of the purchasing power of the American farmer. It is not more legislation, but more team work and co-operation that is needed to solve the farmers' ills." . WASHINGTON, Jan. 17. Further petitions for talc reduction was hsard today by the house ways and meana committee while a variety of projects proposing modification of the Mellon revision plan were under discussion among various groups in both senate and house ' . t .Special consideration was given by the committee to the tax on future trading on produce markets. Philip Campbell, representing the Chicago board of trade, told the committee that the tax was driving the Chicago grain market out ' of existence- and constituted eventually a sales tax on farm products. - I-i. F. Gates of tho Western Grain exchanges' committee declared trade in grain products was boing driven to Canada, increasing the burden of farmers and described tho Chicago grain exchange as depressed bocauso of : the tax. . Representatives of automobile man ufacturers and associations directed a new attack on tho tax on motor .ve hicles, tires, accessories and repair parts. . Representative Kamney, republican, Iowa, dvocated doubling tho present graduating scale of inheritance taxes and adding a gift tax to prohibit eva sion. The measure was referred to1 the agricultural committees of the two houses, which are already busy with ' hearings on various farm relief meas ures. The purpose of tho act Is to maintain prices of farm products of which there is an exportable surplus at the level of pre-war prices from 1905 to 1914 as determined by the secretaries' of agriculture and labor.
