' . For nothing could form a shurpcr contrast to the recent Presiden tial message than the ''Presidential Message". of W. 0. McAdoo is- sued in Los Angeles today. ' j The President's message was essentially non-political, the Mo Adoo message is entirely political ; the President talked business; Mr, McAdoo talks buncombe; the President had little to say about him self, the former Secretary of the Treasury, talks about .himself inces santly. ' . "Everyone of these reforms was inaugurated upder my adminis tration. Even the lessening of the income tax upon earned incomes, was the proposal of the Secretary of the Treasury in tho Wilson ad ministration. ' ' ' ' In fact the egotism of the McAdoo pronouncement is its most st'rik ing characteristic. President Coolidge boasted about nothing, Mc Adoo boasts about everything. "Where McAdoo scores the late President Harding, President (Jnolidge paid his predecessor a high .ti'ibiite.innd gave" him credit or the inauguration of many of the policies which he intends to carry through. . Of course, this, difference in attitude might be expected on party grounds. Put the contrast is significant nevertheless, in marking the temperamental differences of the two men. So if the battle in 1924 is carried on between President Coolidge and Mr. McAdoo, as now scums highly probable, there will be ample material for the artist of drama. As a general proposition, as suming a normal campaign atmosphere Mr. McAdoo would have rather (he better of it, as the people like the picturesque and dynamic per former, and they are usually indifferent 'to the modest conscientious type, incapable of .turning a back hand spring whenever the train stops. . -Hut there lire indications thut the atmosphere will not be normal. There is at least a chance that tho people will be in a mood next year to analyze pretty carefully, to discount extravagant claims rather liberally and to be more sympathetic with the man who depends upon facts und hard work than the man whose stock in trade is noise and fury. .' First, .the virulence which Is Indicated by the power of certain germs to pro duce toxins or poisons If the germs are able to fusten on the tissues and multiply therein, as In diphtheria and tetanus. Second, the virulence which allows a microbe to grow on the sur face of the mucous membranes, mak ing the host a currier of such germs us the pneumococcus and the diph theria bacillus. Third, the virulence which allows growth in the tissues as In ordinary Infection when an opening Is accidentally or surgically made into the body tissues. Fourth, the viru lence which permits the invasion of the body thru Intact mucous .mem- ! branes, as presumably happens . la I some severe epidemics. , Some strains of diphtheria germs 1 have virulence of the first kind -for , many, of us, the nose oi vlduals they succeed in toe hold, bo to speak, growing and multiplying on tho surface, not pro ducing toxins nor- causing disease. Such Individuals become carriers; the germs they carry are capable of sur- iving and multiplying if they get into other throats and noses, -producing an unbroken ohaln of carriers perhaps. ' But curiously enough, the case to carrier carrier Is more dangerous than the carrier j to carrier, -carrier because the germs which have recently been In training and in actual battle still retain some of their virulence and can bring H into action If they find the conditions favorable. city at any one time at least 1 per oent of the people are carrier to car rier carriers of diphthoHa -germs. He even finds a hopeful side to the germ carrier ( matter, because .undoubtedly to some degree at least, these carrier microbes, while still capable of pro ducing toxin, have lost .much of the virulence but are still able to im munize, (. Instead, many of us. develop a certain amount of Immunity against the res piratory infections..
