The situation in regard to milk cows, beef cuttle, sheep, hogs i,'imi poultry, is covered as follows. Milk 1'oxv. Kesalts of our special inquiry would seem to Indicate sonic increase in numbers of dairy cows in the state However, it is the opinion of some -.. , lm ua jdustry that numbers for the state as I ports also indicate sonic Increase iu j numlwrs in the const counties. On I the whole, vvc are Inclined to believe V, , Mv .1- 1-1- ...1 s.,n.n I., lfn-inumlHr of - COw , the .utc. has occurred during: the past year. Beef Cattle. A few estimates In some districts have placed tho 1921 decrease iu numbers as high as 40 per cent, but other reports from the same general section, seem to indicate taat there livestock, in order that they may feed up their crop, and there Is nt the present time more stock being fed in liakcr valley than tor several years past." Iteceipts of cattle of Oregon origin at the Portland Cnion Stock Yards during 1321, Were only 81 per cent of the 1920 receipts." ,'ct much varia tion occurred in 191$ and 191, but 1 1920 showed considerable increase, 'indicating somewhat heavier percent- ago of marketings. This probably Bomewhat reduced the breeding stock, for 1321. but not sufficiently to ac-1 i count for the 17 per cent decrease in' pense jthe 1921 stockyards receipts. We be-jGeo. 1,. , Howard, deputy lieve there has been less decxeas In! sheriffs Uavoling ex- the 1921 stockyards recoiuts. Hogs. ' All indications i.oin't to a consider- ;auio decrease in tlyj number of bogs - during the past year. The individual fann reports indicate a decrease of about 15 per rent. 1321 receipts of w.r. ,.t n,-,... .., .i,. i.wi.,.i fctock yards decreased 3S per cent over tho receipts for 1820. Jteports indicate some increase In the number of young hogs on band January 1 1922, over January 1, 1921. This con dition would seem to indicate the probability of an Increase ln the state hog production for the year J922 over 1921. The supply of hogs has been Insufficient to meet the packers' needs during the past year. The Port land Cnion Stock Yards reports the receipt ot 44,34.1 hogg from the states of North and South I-iakota, during the year 1921. Uuring the month of January, 1922, 10,091 hogs were re ceived from the state of South Dakota alone. Poultry. Individual farm sc hedules indicate quite a decided Increase In the num ber of poultry on Oregon farms dur ing recent years. Farmers feel Ihut the price of eggs has been more nearly in lino with the price of ar ticles the farmer must buy, than most any other farm product, during the past two years. This largely accounts for the increased Interest In poultry. Western eggs have found a very ex cellent eahtf.-rn market during thi )at.t two years. This largely accounts for the Increased Interest in poultry. (raJug Permits. The grazing section of the U. H. forestry service, report that applica tions to date for grazing permits dur ing 1922, indicate that there will be more cattle on tho forest reserves than last year, 1 nfuet, more than any yar since 1318. A portion of this in crease is doubtless duo to decrease in grazing ureas outside of the forest re serve. Forestry supervisors are of the opinion that the numbers of both cuttle and sheep . bave decreased somewhat In both Oregon and Wash ington during tho past year. , F. L.
