A targe body of troops appeared on the streets of Belfast this afternoon. They were the first to be sent here since the renewed outbreak of disorders. LONDON. Feb. 11 (Hy Associated to overthrow the provisional govern- jment; the sudden and unexplained suspension of the British military evacuation and the dangerous tension between the north and ssuth have combined to produce a serious situa tion in Ireland. The outcome no one here ventures to .forecast more defin itely than by speculating on the dread d possibilities, but dispatches show that the position on the frontier is not far removed from a state of war. In deed, the prospect of civil war is being seriously discussed in Belfast and else where in the north. The dispatches sent by Belfast cor respondents of the London newspapers '. represent the temper of the Ulster i men as being such that, unless the kid naped unionists are speedily released. there will certainly follow an explosion which may lead to war. Increase British Troops The British, government has pro mised to increase the troops in Ulster by four battalions, bringing the total to fnnrti-en ;inil tn noiii! more if ntcp. sary and it is assumed that some of the forces held from embarking yester- day, are destined for the north. Pre mier Craig, of Ulster, is said to have suggested to the llritisli government the desirability of posting troops on the south side of the border but this was tirtuly refused. All available northern police are be ing more to the frontier from the quiet areas, according to the Dally Mail's lielfast correspondent, and the boun dary, will soon be lined with ten thou sand armed and disciplined men. The difficulty of preventing "the guns going off of themselves.'' under these circumstances, is emphasized by the correspondent who says that at Pettigo. in county Donegal, the rival forces are separated only by the width of a street, while at llelcoe and Hellek 1.. n L- 1. .1 l. ill ilium, r f i iiiiiu.ii: li. in,-, ill u H.iiini- ing each other from the onnosire ends of the bridge.
