BELFAST, Feb. 14. (By Asso
ciated Press.) A targe body of
troops appeared on the streets of
Belfast this afternoon. They were
the first to be sent here since the
renewed outbreak of disorders.
LONDON. Feb. 11 (Hy Associated

between the north and ssuth have
combined to produce a serious situa
tion in Ireland. The outcome no one

that the position on the frontier is not
far removed from a state of war. In
deed, the prospect of civil war is being
seriously discussed in Belfast and else
where in the north.
The dispatches sent by Belfast cor
respondents of the London newspapers

naped unionists are speedily released.

Increase British Troops
The British, government has pro
mised to increase the troops in Ulster
by four battalions, bringing the total

sary and it is assumed that some of
the forces held from embarking yester-
day, are destined for the north. Pre
mier Craig, of Ulster, is said to have
suggested to the llritisli government
the desirability of posting troops on
the south side of the border but this
was tirtuly refused.
All available northern police are be
ing more to the frontier from the quiet
areas, according to the Dally Mail's
lielfast correspondent, and the boun
dary, will soon be lined with ten thou
sand armed and disciplined men.
The difficulty of preventing "the
guns going off of themselves.'' under
these circumstances, is emphasized by
the correspondent who says that at
Pettigo. in county Donegal, the rival
forces are separated only by the width
