1921 SEASON HITS LOW RECORD FOR FOREST FIRE LOSS As to smnll number of fires ami unimportant ones at that, the past season for the Crater National Finest district was record breaking. There were only 77 Tires Inside of the vast forest and two outside In immediately! adjoining stato territory which is pro-! tocted by the. federal forest service. I Of these fires 19 wero caused byj lightning, and 111 as the result of care-! leasness on the part of pipe, oiuar or I clgarnt smoking or of camp fires loft' by campers or travelers through the forest. Seven fires wero of incendiary origin and one fire was sot by a blast ing fuse. ..".The total acreage burned over was 07.68 acres, and very little damnge was done. The total loss caused by fire was -only - $7M.14. Tho cost of lighting all these fires was only J2G18.0r. according to Supervisor Hugh 11. This bullion weighs 92 ounces and is the result of an eight day's run, (one shift of ten hours per day) with a five-stamp mill. This is tile second shipment of bullion from the mine in the last two weeks, the last shipment bringing $lf.Gl for a run of six days. Further development at the mine Is proceeding dally. A tunnel is now being driven which will cut the vein at a level 100 feet lower than It lias yet been cut. When this tunnel strikes, (he vein a depth of 600 feet will be included between the high and low level cross cuts. A erew of six hien Is now steadily employed at the mine. The lumber business of the Pacific coast states is improving rapidly, ac cording to .lames H. Owen, president and manager of the California and Oregon lumber company of Mrookings, Or., who is registered at the Fort, ami hotel. Mr. Owens divides nis time be tween the mills at Brookings and the office of the company in San Francis co. Like other lumber men, he is hop ing for the railroads to start purchas ing lumber for ties and car construc tion. Vnder normal conditions the railroads demand approximately 4 per cent of the lumber products of the coast. At present, due to financial conditions, they are not making great pin chases.
