In company with Fred HcauvniH, guide of the . wilds found the bluebird of hap piness in those woods where hide the heron, the wild goose and the loon. The hunch of fine haired hellralsers headed by Hill Haywood, who have been unrestricted In their devilment for the past eight years, will now go to Jail and stay there, without tiny sentimental poppycock about "radical thought molding Justice, atid temper ing humanity's upward progress." S FAR AS foreign relations are concerned President Harding's message is merely a confirmation of Secretary Hughes' note. The League of Nations, as far as this country is concerned, is defi nitely scrapped. Peace with Germany is to hc'seeiired through reso lution, with the understanding that if a situation similar to the situa tion in 15)14 arises, the United States will take similar action. J in t it is plainly indicated this action does not mean American iso lation. President Harding definitely pledges the administration to a suhseipicnt conference of nations, and the creation of an interna tional association, for Ihe promotion of peace, hut without a military alliance to enforce its provisions. As previously pointed out in this column, this action, in brief, is no less than the assumption of world leadership by the United States Instead of the United States going to Kurope, Kurope must ioine to the I'nitf il States. The enunciation of this policy marks the final transition from an idealistic to a realistic, diplomacy. For in thus definitely outlining the new American policy, the fact of America's iiiheriei.t supremacy in the world today is, for the first time oflieially recognized. The United Statesman take this indepen dent stand, because without America nothing can be done. And the validity of this position is graphically sustained, by I he immediate acquiescence ol tho world powers. According to today's reports from Washington, France promptly recognizes the propriety of America s action, Japan proceeds to re organize her foreign policy in conformity with it, ami tinat iit-it inn is eager for co-operation and harmony. What dot's this mean? It means that the United States, through its economic and financial power, has the whip hand, and intends to use it. It, tines not intend to use this power aggressively or selfishly, but it does intend to use it, for the reconstruction of world affairs, in conformity with American traditions and American ideals. UiKiuestionably this action, fairly represents the present temper of the American people- The apparent incorrigibility of Furope, the inahiliiy of the League of Nations, either to prevent war, or even ex ert a moral pressure toward a return to work and peace, has pretty thoroughly convinced the American rank and file that for the pres tnt at least, the United States better keep free fi i any entangle ments born of the war. There is a wide spread disposition to avoid complications until the world atmosphere has cleared, until the post war confusion is less intense. I This is the essence of the new Hughes-Harding statesmanship,- to maintain American independence diplomatically, to go forward slowly, am) to post pone the solution of each problem until it arises, that is until circumstances rentier a solution imperative.
