Booze" ban had its ancient and honorable ancestry In the English language uncovered here recently by Prof. William II. llulme of Western Keserve university. Labeled for generations as an ety mological outlaw and branded as such with quotation marks, Prof. llulme finds "booze" has a pedigree1 longer than that of most kings. Its earliest spelling, according to Prof. Hit line, was "bowse." Later writings show it was "bouse" and finally "booze." "Both as a noun and ' verb the word," Prof. Ultimo said, "written "bowse" in middle English diterature as far back as 1U00, had tho mean ing 'to drink in excess.' About 1GU0 the word lost tho honorable-character it had and became a slang word. The particular 'housing" Is recorded as early us 1529, and 'bouser was used in Euglish in 1611."
