MEN 10 CAN 7 REASON TRY 10 NA Those Who Fouyht Preparedness, Who Denounced Patriots as Bought by Munition Trust Are Still Try. ing to Prevmt Us From Doing a Real Part in the Great War. By Charles Kdward ISussell. WASHINGTON. April 25. There are two orders of mind in tills world those that can put 2 and 2 together and those that can't. Horn that way, no doubt. The principal business of thoso that can't is to sit around and de nounce those that can denounce them and block them and spoil any plans they may make for the common good. For fiomo years before the Euro pean cyclone broke, all men that hnd any power of vision saw It gathering and knew that safety required this country to put its house of defense In some order. These were denounced as tools of the profit grabbers. Denounce All Suggestions. Sucli men said that the volunteer system was worn out and antiquated and If this country wanted to bo aible to take care of Itself It must have a citizen army. They were denounced ns "militar ists" and advocates of the dread spec tre of a "huso standing army." In April, 19 111, whon Germany adopted her extraordinary war credit of $250,000,1)00, ail men with any power of vision knew that war was but a question of months. Such men were attacked as dream ers and lunnatlcs. Tho peace of Eu rope was eternally fixed. There was the socialist party of fierninny, which would always prevent, war, and there was the kaiser, that wonderfully se rene Influence. Didn't ho say that ho was in favor of peace, and If ho hnd any intention to attack Europe wouldn't he say so to everybody? I'vcrytliinir Denounced, Tho moment war broke out all men of any vision know perfectly well that tho chances were the United States would beconio Involved In it, and begged tho nation to take sonio steps to care for Itself. All such men wero denounced ns agents of Iho armor plato trust and low, wretched creatures. When Germany crushed Serbia in the fall of 1015, it was obvious to all thinking men that the United StateH could not allow autocracy, represent ed by (lermany, to become tho domi nant force in the world, and that Boouer or later we must fllit her. Such men were denounced as "Hrl tlsh agents," "war maniacs," and por tions that "wanted to have our boys Bent to the front to be slaughtered." Liftlnniu Instance. When Germany murdered the Lusl tnnla, passengers, when sho persisted In iter monstrous policy of murder, when it was plain that all attempts to reason with a mad dog would be fu tile, when, on January 31, she pro claimed the savagery sho hnd long practiced, all thinking men said again and again that this meant war for the United States and that not a moment should bo lost In getting ready for the inevitable. Such men were denounced ns de prnved advocates of brute force and Impenetrable by tin ywect allure ments of nrbitratlo.i and the dreams of . J. Hiyan. Many times we urged that the annv should be made efficient and the navy should be put In lits best shape to meet, the stormy days th.'l threatened ings, the Btupidlty and the ignorance of the men that can't. United With Germuni. They are now united with the Kaiser's Own in this country, the American von Hindeuburg brigade, tho German reservists In and out of congress, to prevent the thing just as necessary to our success, honor and safety as wore the machine guns, the citizens army, the navy preparation and the other things advocated by the men that can. 'It Is that as soon as possible, with the utmost celerity, we should have American troops upon the western battle front. We have regulars enough and to spare, they are perfectly trained and perfectly equipped, the best soldiers in the world. Xothing is needed hut transportation and supply organiza tion, and in ten days an American contingent will be thrilling the whole allied front, from the EngllBh channel to Mesopotamia, with Indescribable. enthusiasm. It Them Waggle Idly. The men that can't have already Inflicted upon this country an Injury huge enough for all time, They should not be allowed to do us any more harm. IjcI them waggle their poor jaws and mutter their nonsense and walk their little circles. If they will, but let them do it in convocations of their own kind. Let them listen to them selves and have no other hearers, for the things they preach are folly and destruction. It they will do nothing to help, let them get out of tho way! The democracies against the autoc racies. No more kings, no more wars! And tho swift punch docs the business! FOR UNITED STATES (Continued from Page One.) the swirl of the watov I quickly or dered the man at the wheel to pull It to starboard and we Bwung the nose of the ship toward the spot where the submarine had been seen. We were going at full speed ahead and two minutes after we first sighted the U-boat It emerged again about 1000 yards off. Its intention probably had been to catch us broadside on, but when It appeared we had the stern gun trained full on it. "The lieutenant gave the coin in and and the big gun boomed. We saw the periscope shattered and the shell and the submarine disappeared. "I can't speak too highly of the cool manner in which the lieutenant handled his gunners. It was a fine exhibition of the efficiency of Amer ican naval men. Gun Named Konsevclt. "We did not stop to reconnoiter after the incident but steamed away at full speed, for It was not Improba ble that there was another submarine about. The one we got undoubtedly had been lying on the bottom at the spot waiting for ships and eanio up when It heard our propellers. "That's about all the story, except- j ing this: The gunners had named the guns on board tho Mongolia, and the one whhh got the submarine was called Theodore Roosevelt; so Teddy fired the first gun of the war after all." Mongolia or l;J,0;tK Tons. NEW YORK, April 25.
