1 MEBFOTIT) "MATH TRrnTTNTI irEPFO'R'n. OT?F,C!OX TTTERDAT. 'ArTtfL" 24. 1 01 7 PAOFi FTVE ST E Miss Rankin Generally Liked by Col- ;i leagues Attitude Toward Her Lfoe That of Big Family Boys Toward a Little Sister Has Good gs ueai ui i aii ami Lommun sense. BY GILS0N" GARDNER. WASHINGTON-, April 24. The irst woman congressman is gener ally liked by her men colleagues.! t"bel rattltude toward her may best be likened to that of a big family of lioys to the one little sister. They Iiljl are anxious to do something for her and in a kind brotherly way are overwhelming her wit hattentlon. I Miss Rankin Is taking it all with dignified composure. She has not Been swept off her fee.t nor Is she austere or unfriendly. She evident ly is of the mind that likes people, and to her even men aer people.,. Is a Good Type. Mis sRankln is a good type to serve as first woman' congressman. She is nice looking without being pretty or beautiful. She wears good colthes gracefully, but could not be charged with being' "dressy.", She Is thor oughly womanly; does not suggest the hard-vlsaged feminist of the cartoons, and at the same time she avoids any suggestion of the flirtatious or coy. There Is nothing of the purring pussy about Jcanette. . As to suffrage tho fact that she is in congress is the best vidence that Miss Rankin Is a god BUffragist. To obtain the ballot for women is the. one big thing for her. Other Issues she views rather 'broadly perhaps typically. She is not slant-minded rwr an extremist. Her mind is open and honest and she has evident cour age to back her convictions event though she may vote In tears. Her Vote on War. Her vote against war was a good illustration. Sho had expected to Tote for war. She had not given the matter much thought, but her brother who wuk also nor backer and cam paign manager, had advised her strongly to vote a "man's vote" on the war issue. He assured her that otherwise she would discredit herself and justify the charge that women were all alike and opposed to war far sex reasons. MisR Rankin heard all tho debMe on the war resolution. She planled herself In the senate when the debate besjan and was there when the vote was taken. Then she did the same thing n the house, Ly midnight of the dav the vote was .laiien she had Aholu made up her mU'd to vote against war. SALF.M, Ore, April 24 Oovor nor Wlthycombe today appointed the Oregon council of defense at the re quest of Newton D. Baker, secretary of war, and chairman of the national council of defense. The council will work in co-opcratlon with the nation al council of defense. Those named are: Henry Ladd Corbett, president of the chamber of commerce, Port land; General Charles F. Beebe, Port land; D. N. Stanfleld, Stnnfleld; O. C. Leltcr, La Grando; C. S.Hudson, president First National hank. Bend; W. E. Schln.pff, Astoria; Charles Hall, Marshfleld. She couldn't pay the fine, so was cast In jail for two weeks. Another party of women had been turned out of e small village near Ncslo at 3 a. m., when tho Germans fired the town and left. They wandered to Nesle purely by luck. Otherwise they might have gone on for days through a desolated land without human habitation. Saddest were those women who had seen tb' irs forced to leave for seme punt i rther back of the German lines. They had no assur ance of the fate reserved for the girls, so were left to Imagine the worst fate possible. "Walt till we cross the Rhine!" we heard French soldiers threaten be tween clenched teeth. If the Germans, by widespread de struction hoped to terrify the French or dull their military ardor, they have failed. Tho ruins through which the French are advancing have Just the opposite effect. The temper of the pollus Indicates there may 'bo reprisals "when we cross the Rhine." FRENCH MISSION ARRIVE (Continued from Page One.) and rough temporary fittings. LISTEN TO THIS! , SAYS CORNS LIFT RIGHT: OUT NOW You reckless men and women who are pestered with corns and who have at least once a week invited an awful death from lockjaw or blood poison are now told by a Cincinnati authority to use a drug called freezone, which the moment a few drops are cpplled to any corn, the soreness is relieved and soon tho entire corn, root and all. lifts out with the angers. It is a sticky ether compound which dries the moment it ia applied and Bimply Bhrivels the corn without inflam ing or even irritating tne surround ing tissue or Bkin. It is claimed that a quarter of an ounce of freczon will cost very little at any of the drug stores, but Is sufficient to rid one's feet of every hard or soft corn or callus. You are further warned that cutting at a corn Is a suicidal habit. FOR RENT FURNISHED ROOMS.
