The oil trust rohs the people hecaiise it can. It is just like other trusts that have a monopoly. It 'has taken advantage of the Uurupeaii war and the ensiling eliiuina t i n of foi'eiii ((iin)ietition, to charge all the traffic will hear and the niany miLst pay the hill in increased cost of living that the few inay he hurdeiied still further hy uiuiee cssary and iinneeilcd wealth. Tiie Ucderal Trades report is a severe indictment of the met hods nl present employed hy the Standard Oil company, though it does not go into the history of the crimes perpetrated to establish the monopoly. These are familiar to every student of the past half century. Kail road rebating has gone, but arbitrary price fixing remains. I iicqualit ies in price, regardless of tin; laws of supply and demand, to control competition continue. Pipe lines, the common carriers of the oil product, are still man aged in the interest of monopoly. II is doubtful if any or all of the suggestions made by the coiiiiiiissioii will bring relief Jo the people. Dissolution of the combine hv the courts proved a farce that magnified the evils sought to remedy. products to the ) 1 1 1 1 1 1 - and mull iplicd many told the prolits of the producers. Only a fundamental change, such as government, control or government ownership can bring needed relief. The war has made it possible to accomplish many needed reforms almost over night by executive action reforms that would otherwise have involved tedious years of agitation and education. Among these reforms should he federal seizure' and operation of Hie oil industry. Uuro pean belligerents have found it necessary to carry out similar programs in their industries and America should profit by the lessons of Kurope. The oil fields, the coal mines and other natural re sources belong to the nation. Individuals who discover nud develop them are entitled to a fair profit, but they are not entitled to systematically and unnecessarily conduct campaigns of robbery, to exploit the public and secure profits out of all proportion to the service rendered and that is the system under which they are at present operated. Production cost of oil, production cost of coal, or pro duction cost of any necessary of civilization is known to a peiiuv. Capital invested is also known. The selling price should be fixed by the government, so as to give a fair margin ol prolit. but no more and it such arrangement is not satisfactorv, the propertv should be confiscated and operated directly by the government. Only by some such radical action can the exploitation of the many tor the benefit of the few be checked and the common good be served.
