A 'flie purpose and object of the asso ciation for the year 1017 is to devote its best efforts for the betterment of good roads in the stale of Oregon and especially the construction and com plelimi of the l'acifie highway, con necting the states of Washington and California and such other roads and highways as provided for in the legis lative ai t passed as amended under bill No. .liiU. Secretary George E. Hons is 111 ready in receipt of letters from mem bers of the association of the three states offering their assistance in the campaign. An advisory board consisting of good roads advocates of every city anw town in Oregon will be selected shortly to assist, the association in spreading the gospel and organizing n strong campaign for better roads The states of Washington and Cali i'ornia who are vitally interested in roads will also he called upon to help. j 'Pin? tri-state organization is one wjthjjnlcrcstod members in the sister states who will be 'called upon to as sist. Crater Lake is yearly becoming bet ter known. Its scenic beauties, un- surjiasscd in the world, are becoming magnets that constantly glowing stronger, draw to themselves each year a constantly growing stream of motors and niotorisU. The roads to this pre mier scenic attraction are being added to and improved and It will be only o matter of a few years until a paved highway will streLch from Medford to the Lake. 't he road over the Siskiyou moun tains to tho south, is a cause of con stant rapture to the motorist, both from the scenic standpoint and because of the low grades and . smooth road bed. With the Improvement of the road to the Dlue Ledge mining district In the. coining spring, the mining camp is des tined to become one of the showspots 4f Southern Oregon. 'There are many other beautiful trips ojen to the motorists, which it Is inv jiosslhle to mention here, but It would be altogether unseemly to close such a story without mention of the net work of roads, many of them paved, that lie In the valley proper. Winding bet,ween orchards and ranches they are a source of never-ending delight to the tourist fortunate enough to include the Rogue river valley In his itinery. ASHLAND NEXT Over confidence Is likely to spell defeat of Medford, at least la the first games of the basketball series to be played this w eek and next week between the Ashland and Medford high Bcbool teams. The first game will he played at Ashland Thursday and the second at Medford Friday Two more games will be played tho following week. Since their victory over Rosebuig, the Medford toam has loafed, the players have not kept themselves in good condition and havo adopted the attitude that Ashland is already as good as beaten. The Ashland team, on the contrary Is drilling every day using for their opponents the strong and shifty Ash laud Armory team. It Is about an even break between the two Ashland teams, both showing improvement with every clash. EvERETljpDERS fscapelTprisoner SEATTLE, Wash., March C Thomas W. Tracy, a member of the Industrial Workers of tho JWorld, who was in the "free speech" expe dition to (Everett November 5, lust, on the steamer Verona, was arraigned today in the superior court here, charged with murder in the first de gree. The expedition resulted in a battle at the Everett city dock in which five men on the boat and two deputy sheriffs on tho dock were shot dead. Tracy and 73 others are charg ed with the murder of Deputy Sheriff Jefferson Ileurd. It is expected that completion of the Jury will consume several days and tho whole trial five or six weeks. The French gov. eminent has summoned Germany to reply favorably without delay to the propositions for reciprocal treatment of prisoners of war made by Fiance. A semi-official communication given out here denies categorically the Oemuin claim that the holding of French prisoners of war in the zone of lire behind the tlcrman lines is in reprisal for similar treatment of (ler maii prisoners of war in France. The communication puts French families on guard against what it calls a "maneuver" of the German govern ment, destined to erento anguish and emotion in the public mind, in these so- Ailed reprisals. The French government, it adds, communicated through the American embassy its desire to arrive at a full understanding regarding the treat ment of prisoners in the zone of the armies, bat no reply was forthcoming from Germany. Dusky, convicted of robbing tho State Hunk of Kenton, Wash., and who escaped from tho King county jail last night together with four other prisoners, appeared at the jail after daylight this morning, and pointing a pistol at Jailer Stark, de manded that he be returned to his old cell. The request was granted. Husky's pistol had been taken from Stark last night. The other prison ers, John Souilas, convicted of the murder of a. woman; Percival V. Al len, accused of the murder of Anna Dnnielson; ltobert Ford, awaiting trial pa a charge of manslaughter, nnd W. A. Douoghue, president of the Montana Federation of Labor, is on .the grounds today and will attend n joint meeting of the strike committee and operating committee of the Em ployers' association tonight in the city council chambers. Mr. llonog liue has given out no statement as to bis intentions except to state that he will be here several days and will in vestigate conditions. The statement that the laundries would tonight discharge all help is de nied by the proprietors. The joint meeting of the union operating com mittee tonight is for the purpose of bringing the reply of the unions to the statement given them by the Employ ers' association Saturday night, AMSTERDAM, March Accord ing to the Krvujs Zeitfjng of iterlin, (he entire railway system of Germany has been placed under the military authorities. HKK1.1N, March 5. Two German submarines that recently returned to their bases sank fifteen steamers and seven sailing vessels aggregating 0-1,-500 tons gross, tho admiralty an nounced today. "Ono of the submarines' contin ues the statement, "encountered off the south coast of Ireland n tank steamer fitted up as a suhiuarine trap witji four well-concenled broadside guns. The ship's boats also were in use to throw bombs against subma rines. "After emerging, the submarine had ail artillery engagement from 3 p. m: until dark against this submarine trap and against a submarine de stroyer of the Foxglove tviie which joined her. At least three hits were obtained on the Foxglove.
