SKNC BEAUTIES OF
Oregon, Washington and British Co
lumbia aro to be advertised systemati
cally and on a gigantic scale, as the
brightest tourist's heaven to be found
beneath the skies.
To accomplish this work the North
west Tourist association has been
funned, to act co-operatively with the
legislative bodies.
Jledford and Southern Oregon will
porhaps benefit most Inrgely from this
publicity inasmuch as more In tlie way
of natural beauties, magnificent roads
and opportunities for sport are to be
found ill this section than than In any
other part ot the great Northwest.
Crater Lake is yearly becoming bet
ter known. Its scenic beauties, un-
surjiasscd in the world, are becoming
magnets that constantly glowing
stronger, draw to themselves each year
a constantly growing stream of motors
and niotorisU. The roads to this pre
mier scenic attraction are being added
to and improved and It will be only o
matter of a few years until a paved
highway will streLch from Medford to
the Lake.
't he road over the Siskiyou moun
tains to tho south, is a cause of con
stant rapture to the motorist, both from
the scenic standpoint and because of
the low grades and . smooth road
bed. With the Improvement of the road to
the Dlue Ledge mining district In the.
coining spring, the mining camp is des
tined to become one of the showspots
4f Southern Oregon.
'There are many other beautiful trips
ojen to the motorists, which it Is inv
jiosslhle to mention here, but It would
be altogether unseemly to close such
a story without mention of the net
work of roads, many of them paved,
that lie In the valley proper. Winding
bet, ween orchards and ranches they are
a source of never-ending delight to the
tourist fortunate enough to include the
Rogue river valley In his itinery.
ASHLAND NEXT
Over confidence Is likely to spell
defeat of Medford, at least la the
first games of the basketball series
to be played this w eek and next week
between the Ashland and Medford
high Bcbool teams. The first game
will he played at Ashland Thursday
and the second at Medford Friday
Two more games will be played tho
following week.
Since their victory over Rosebuig,
the Medford toam has loafed, the
players have not kept themselves in
good condition and havo adopted the
attitude that Ashland is already as
good as beaten.
The Ashland team, on the contrary
Is drilling every day using for their
opponents the strong and shifty Ash
laud Armory team. It Is about an
even break between the two Ashland
teams, both showing improvement
with every clash.

PAHIS, March 5. The French gov.
eminent has summoned Germany to
reply favorably without delay to the
propositions for reciprocal treatment
of prisoners of war made by Fiance.
A semi-official communication
given out here denies categorically the
Oemuin claim that the holding of
French prisoners of war in the zone
of lire behind the tlcrman lines is in
reprisal for similar treatment of (ler
maii prisoners of war in France. The
communication puts French families
on guard against what it calls a
"maneuver" of the German govern
ment, destined to erento anguish and
emotion in the public mind, in these
so- Ailed reprisals.
The French government, it adds,
communicated through the American
embassy its desire to arrive at a full
understanding regarding the treat
ment of prisoners in the zone of the
armies, bat no reply was forthcoming
from Germany. Meanwhile, the
threatening reprisals were put into
execution. Therefore notice is given
that Germany must reply
