The body of Oeorge Van Tassel, a rancher living on Sanmsun creek, twelve miles cast of Ashland, was discovered in his cabin on Tuesday by neighbors. He had evidently been dead two days, lie wan n bacbelor recluse, living nlone, nd was the owner of several hundred acres of land in that vicinity. His body was brought to this city Tues day evening by Deputy Coroner Dodge. Kxuininulion showed that the man died of natural causes, an in - u,ucst liciiiir deemed nniu ssary. Van Tassel had no known relatives in this section, and funeral niraic'o menls are being delayed pending do-velopmentM. mission' ;uid ignored southern Oregon, tin- leader of the slate in higliwav developiiicDt. No count v has made greater efforts for fjnod roads than Jackson count v. It was the first to appreciate the value ,,c i,.ii,.it t. nlfic. and in 19(H) secured a state appropriation front the legislature to build u highway to (.'rater Lake, to ........uuililf Oi-enim's "-reatest natural attraction which was at once enjoined bv the "Willamette valley and Crater Lake declared "a local affair" by the supreme court and the appropriation invalidated. Jackson count v was the first county in Oregon to bond itself for permanent highways, and the first county to con struct paved roads. It was the first county to seek federal aid for forest reserve roads. Without state aid, at a cost i.t'i.v ec .00.000. it made automobile traffic with California possible for Oregon with a magnificent highway-over the Siskivou mountains. Tiie personnel of the state commission is all important, in that it will have the direction of the expenditure of state funds, including the proposed $(i,000,000 bond issue. The program outlined calls for the construction of roads cost ing several times the $0,000,000 available before comple tion, and further bond issues will be necessary. 1 lie com mission can, however, spend the available money where it pleases. . ' Lis'tead of naming a southern Oregon man upon the liioliu-iiv commission. Governor 'ithvcoiiile has ap- jiointed to represent the first congressional district K. J. Adams of Kuireiie. a comparative newcomer to the state, who litis never been identified with the good roads move ment and is unknown outside of the city he has resided in for ri. few vears. lie is a real estate operator, aim as lie is v . ... .. a; ... .. -1. iii moderate circumstances, ami me compensation lor tui commission is onlv nominal, the people of hugene have raised a. fund to iiitv him an annual salary, under the ex pectation that he will deliver the goods for Eugene, and see that, t he Jiur iwav luuiis are spent in mat. vicinity. We are told bv the hugenc newspapers that J'Aigene is . i i ' . i i.. -u e i.1...... i,. particularly anxious to nave a roan utiiti. .trout j.uene m K on-nee and .Marsh! icld, and as a concericu enon is nov being made bv the slates ot Washington, Oregon ami ran forma for a coasl highwav, and the completion ol such road would result in through 1 ravel turning oil iroin the Pacific highwav at Kiigene and going to the coast, this of course would cut ol I Douglas, .Josephine and .JacKson conn ticw Riiccne is a so anxious to construct the .Mackenzie road to Mend at the expense of the Crater Lake highway and Mr. Adams will be expected to divert the state fund for co-operalion with the federal government for building these two forest roads. The 'idea in making the stale highway commission a non-salaried board was to secure men of high character, proven ability and financial standing, devoted to the up- building ol the state, that they would cneeriuuy sacmice their time and energy in public service for the state's de velopment. The other t wo appointees, S. ISensou of Port land and W. L. Thompson of Pendleton, fulfill these quali- iicalions. Jt is evident that, in the appointment of Jlr. Adams, die tateel bv political! reasons, a representative, not of the en tire state, but of a particular port ion of the state, has been , i -ii i i.. .....w.:l named, one who is paid oy special niteirsis to hei e ii-ci;u interests, instead of the entire state. Such is not the intent of the law. Nor is such an appointment likely to create public confidence needed to make a success of the highway program. We may be mistaken, and Mr. Adams measure up to the full re(uirenients of the office. The state needs all the highways proposed, and it, is up to the commission to give all sections a square deal. " E e-ted l'.y W. WATSON. Anderson Mills, who came up from Josephine county last evening to ex tend the horizon of his observations in this part of the coast (having never stopped in this valley before), is de lighted with the information he has nciiiired about this peculiarly inter est inn rcjjioii.
