KTEDFOTIT) MATD ' TRTRtTNTC, . METTFOUD, OTJEGOX. WKOXKSDAY. KKHRFARY '21. 1917 TVf!E Tn REE '. I' By W. W. WATSON. In (lie list of nopper developments Hulking substantial progress in the district tribtilnry to Medford is tlint of the United Copper eoiiipiiny in the tlnivo Creek district, !ia miles from this city. This is one of the must )roniisiii(,' copper properties in the west" both in extent and richness of ores. Little has been heard of it for Koine time, due largely to the change in ownership and to the (piiet methods V,f development employed by the new 'company, whose members are Se attle people. .' , The Copper Kiiifr, on which the chief development work is now in progress, was formerly operated by ' the Unlock brothers as a gold mine; but when the investigator for the United Copper company had complet ed his work, that organization took it over as copper property, utihvtili slandiiif; the fact Hint the ore showed u'jfood uverajje in jjold a very large average at times. The percentage of copper, however, was so attractive that the name was changed and vigor ous work beinii to develop it as a cop per properly. Easiness I'Voni the Start. The United Copper company is composed largely of voiine; men who bce.au work on ibis property to make a mine. They were not mere prospec tors, whose ambition-was to uncover something to sell. The big money to be made in a good mine is found in its -scientific operation. On this practical theory they began business. An CMiiipment was at once pnr I'hased and lias rc-emly been install- ed. H consists of an excellent air coinpres-or, several machine drills, a concent ni I ii'g plant, in which a lilakc crusher, a Kjiu-t humping screen, a set of Slurtcvaul rolls with a capacity of tw.i tens per hour (arrangements have been made to replace these with roughing ro'M, otic Knust jig with a "daily capacity of ."0 tons, an Atlas engine, together with elevators, con veyors, abundant water supply, belt ,iug, shafting, and other accessories necessary. A '2")-horse power boiler will be delivered to the plant this week with a lbxUJ steam engine, bringing the capacity up to oo-horse p'lwer. 'flic ultimate capacity of the plant will he ."ill tons of raw ore per day. Sawmill on lie lioad. A sawmill plant has been installed and is now busy' turning oat the necessary lumber. Hight off the reel the company pro posed lo gel its prodiict out to Hie world. Its I'iivt carload of concen trates is now en route to the Taeoina & smelter. The only road leading lo a connection with the Southern l'avitic is from the mine to I. eland in Joseph ine county the mine lining situated in Jackson, county. It is Hi miles up Kvans creek valley from Uogue Iiivcr to the property. Nine miles of road mast be built to make (he c innection that way. 'file United Copper com pany, I lie timber men ami the farmer of Kvnn.s creek valley have already nplclcd the plan to construct that st retell of mountain i'oad to enable them to deliver their output to the Southern Pacific at Koguc Uiver. That is a type of enterprise suggestive of real business. The completion of that stretch of road will make Med io rd the headquarters 0r all of the camps of the CI rave or'el; district. All Offci-'Tilrncd Down. Since the Ujiited Copper company liee-an to develop its properties it has received and refused an offer of fl.'iO.Omi ea-.li for its "prospect." The ledge in the Copper King lw iflieen uncovered 88 feet. The shaft is 5(1 feet in depth. The ledge i.ver ages better than seven feet ail tin way down, on a Ill-degree dip. Cco logicallv the formation -hows that the b.d..c lias been forced nil from a gre.il oeplli. The assays of the conicii trates is taken from eight tons of ore. Kveiythiug brought mi the -'iiif'- i-n-icd in the concent wi. or. Xot hi dime of ore has been picked for :i--tiiv or other purposes.
